Dude, do not go to best buy. check Newegg, I just searched for a geforce 6600 agp 256mb and found several for 113.00 plus 5 for shipping and thats 3 day shipping.
I was able to get Civ $ running on a GeForce 2MX 64 meg. I did not install the new drivers due to the fact that it was over 20 Mg and I only have dial-up. So I first tried to see how the game ran. First time it started the beginning music was real choppy, so I just skipped by it. A message popped up saying that since I was below minimum requirements it would adjust game play( or something like that). I started a game and was able to play just fine. No hidden terrian or black outs. I can't see the wonder movies, but no big deal. No crashes, at all while playing. Played for about an hour then started a new game because the first game was just for playing around to get used to the interface. Played for about another hour just fine.
I really think that using the newest driver is not always the best idea because of two reasons :
- First, when the firaxis beta testers have tested the game - two or three month ago - they have not used the same drivers as we are using now, they used the latest drivers at those times! Maybe the drivers have changed a bit since, and new bugs have appeared because of changes in the drivers behaviors.
I give just an example - I don't say it's true of course but it could be - : in the older driver there was a strange behavior in a function (this function never returned a error code), so Civ4 developpers used a workaround. Now it's fixed in the new drivers, but then Civ4 has a memory leak because they do not detect the error code and they don't free the memory associated.
- Second, the nvida developpers are focusing mainly on the new video cards, and maybe their support for old card drop. And maybe new bugs can appear with those cards. Indeed Civ4 is buggy, but nvidia developpers are not god neither, they can also add new bugs in the newest drivers.
At least, in my situation, using an older driver has solved the CTD problems so i think this could help others and i suggest that some people experiencing regular CTD should give it a try.
My game has crashed only 2wice. And I've probably played well over 20 hrs. It crashed 2 times in a row when I changed the pixel shader, something I read in another post. Other than that it works satisfactory. However, Its really slow and laggy and I dont know if its the ram or the video card cause Ive read in other posts that people with 64 meg cards are running the game ok. Ive also noticed that the minimal RAM requrements are 256mb with windows 2000 and 512 with windows xp... I only have 448 with windows xp, could this be my problem
448 ??? a 256 with a 128??? I did go ahead and order that 256 6600. even though I have a 256 5700. But I still think it is a memory leak on the larger maps that is killing my games. I will tell you I am a little jelious of your game play time. Mine is much worse and I have better hardware.
I did try to down grade my vid driver and got the same ctd. I am confused as hell on this game.
I am frustrated and worn down by the amount of work I have put into trying to get this game to work.
nope, uninstalled the old drivers, gave drivercleaner a go and then installed another set.
i am running omega cats 5.4 now and the problems never returned
From other posts on this site I would say the GeForce4 MX is not cut out for this game. Please don't shoot the messenger.
My guess, I am running a 5700 256mb and still getting ctd's after a few hours. I am guessing this is a memory leak having to do with large maps. If you can I would try to update your vid card. sounds like those with 6600 and above are not having as many problems.
I have an Inspiron 8200 laptop with a GeForce4 MX 440 GO card and it runs Civ4 fine. Mind you, I had to install a beta version of the nVidia drivers to get it to work, but the hardware itself seems up to the task.

hi all
first off i never could go further than 5.4 in the radeon drivers coz i got the missing leaderheads error (or what else to call it) but since i switched my sapphire radeon 9600 with a asus a9800xt and running 1.61 patch i got no errors whatso ever guess i'am just lucky or sapphire makes crap cards
anyhow things are working great here now.
