How I Spent Independence Day Eve

I mean, the real issue here isn't that I was supposed to work Monday. If I actually had, it would have been ridiculous - as a receptionist I am the one person in the office who knows nothing about what our company actually does (which is why, when something goes wrong, the customers blame me . . .). But I wasn't supposed to at all, except that my boss is evidently a better liar than he realizes.

Better liar, or better joker?

Well, I would imagine that a good joker would admit that he is joking when someone calls him on it, rather than insisting he is serious and never bothering to correct it. I guess in the long run no real harm was done (it shot my whole day, and my brother was up from GA visiting, but oh well) but it seems like this sort of thing happens to me a lot.

That really depends on what kind of joker he is. Some people can be totally serious, yet joking at the same time. If you're not familiar with that style of joking and the person doing it, it could very well look like they're not joking. Even if they insist they are.

Chalk it up to a learning experience. Hey...it could have been a lot worse.

Anyways, I shouldn't complain too much. I myself have accidentally combined my innate sarcasm with my complete deadpan to inadvertantly insult people before. I would think that my facial expression made it clear I was joking, but it didn't. My face is completely expressionless.

What funny is that Eran seems to get forum humour awfully well. And we're hardly the pinnacle of 'full body expression' when we're joking.

Yeah, that's kind of weird. I can express myself here a lot better than in "real" life also. I guess I am just much better at e-communication than the regular old-fashioned kind, or something.

Not unusual.

I have a very dry sense of humor, in person. But when I come across someone who has the same kind of humor as I do, I often don't get it. It was kinda bad for me, at my last job. My manager had the same sense of humor I did. We had to be careful joking with each other.

If he fooled you into working when you didn't actually have to, you should prank him back, see how he likes it.

Except that until I can find a better job, I need the money here. What could I do anyways? Besides, I don't think it was his intention to make me come in to work, he just forgot that would be the natural consequence of telling me to come in and that he wasn't joking about it.

or better yet, set the office on fire (out of view from any of the security cameras), and be the one in the office at the right time to "save it" you'd be a hero!
