When you sign a research agreement with someone else you sign it not for gold but GPT. Every turn that you pay gold an appropriate sum of points is added into the science project. The ammount of science points added in your science project varies on how far you have teched. The ammount of science points also increases as the deal becomes older. For example you receive less science points on turn 1 of the deal than on turn 20. Once the research agreement is over, the sum of science that had gathered into the science project is added to a random available tech.
