It depends on a great variety of factors, including map size, targeted victory condition, size of the starting island, etc....

More than 1 and less than 513. On average, whole bunches. In any given game, I build and conquer cities until the game is over or the 512 city limit is reached. This is a silly question.

i build a ring of about 10 core cities, then do some ancient conquest for more cities. any cities beyond the ring will be corrupted, useless, and a waste of time.

Not ANY game... if you're not playing on a super-sized map then you won't reach 512.

As for me, I play on a wide range of different sizes of maps, so I can't really vote in this poll. On the smallest maps, sometimes I only build a couple of cities... on the largest, many hundreds of them (though I must confess I've never reached the 512 city limit - I don't play on large enough maps to do so, because I just get sick of the lag... ).
