How many GB do you think the D/L of this game will be?

I'm guessing around 5-7gb . Maybe less if it's well packed.
See also this thread for a discussion on how many layers the DVD will be and thus whether the download will be 4.7 GB max or more. But yeah, 5-7 GB isn't a bad guess. The offical system requirements say 8 GB free space, but that's probably with a little installing going on.

How long does a download of that size typically take?
That depends entirely on the type and speed of connection you have.

Assuming a 6 GB download, if you've got a 20 mbit cable/adsl connection in theory it would take a minimum of 43 minutes to transfer 6 GB. If you've got an old 56kbps modem, it'd be 10 days and 15 hours.

In practice, you never reach those speeds for a variety of reasons. Your PC also needs to shout "yes, got it, send some more" from time to time, there are internet bandwidth limitations, Steam server load limitations, your ISP may advertise with a 20 mbit because it sounds nice, but actually you're sharing the 20 mbit with your neighbours and all that.

So, multiply with PI, or more. Then 20 mbit transforms into 2 hours if you're lucky. If you only have a 4 mbit download, ... you do the math. Luckily, steam comes with a built-in download manager, so you can resume an interrupted download.

My guess is 4.3-4.5 GB.

big. probably too big for downloading over a wireless g connection in a dorm full of internet addicts in a reasonable amount of time.

Speaking as a network geek, you will be much better off finding a plug in ethernet port somewhere than using wireless in a dorm. I won't get into the network technicalities, but there is a big big difference between a dedicated port and a shared medium like wireless. And in a crowded shared environment, it gets worse fast. You not only get much crappier download speeds, you can hog the bandwidth that is available and make yourself unpopular.

I downloaded my copy of Civ3 complete from d2d on a standard Comcast internet connection (12 to 16 megabits per second per their vague definitions) and the overall speed was 1.5 Megabytes per second. That is a probably a good approximation for most household cable level broadband. I also downloaded a demo from Steam, (The Mafia 2 demo was aid to be similar in graphics demand to Civ 5.) That got up to 1.7 megabyte per second. So Steam is a little bit more efficient at doing the transfer than Direct2Disk.

It still depends on a lot of variables we will never know about in remote conversation with you and that you may not be aware of yourself. I'd advise patience, but since I am going to be sitting there staring at a download progress bar while yelling at the household to stay off the net, it would be hypocritical advice.

I'm just gonna bring my lappy to work and download the game over our T1 line. Then I can feign sickness after lunch and go home and play ciV for the rest of the day!!! :P

I'm gessing between 7 and 10 G.

Will probably take me around 30-45min to download with the awesome internet speed I get on steam.

Unless of course the steam server can't handle the release, but that's civ... Not left 4 dead. pre-download would realy be awesome.

Another suggestion for steam downloads, if the server is getting hammered you can change your DL location to another server. TF2 updates usually pound the US servers and switching to a European server (like the Swiss one) usually provided me with decent DL speeds. I don't know if Steam will get hit that hard for Civ5 but its a good trick to know. And thankfully Steam normally has pretty good servers, I've gotten up to 9MB/s speeds before though am generally around 2-4MB/s which is over twice what I normally get from http DLs.

Around 5 Gb seems a fair guestimate. In my place it will take about an hour, give or take.

this is the only reason I'm not buying from Steam. If it is 6GB, than with my connection I wouldn't be playing until 30 September!

Seriously, when I d/l'd Brothers in Arms: Hell's Highway, it took almost three days.

I'll guess 10 gigs

If the installed game reqs 8g...

5-7 sounds reasonable but it kind of depends how their assets are put together. Chances are they are not compressed and are inefficient for storage, so the instealler could be under 4g if the total install is 8g.

Let's hope it doesn't turn out like Supreme Commander 2, where the zero day updates were bigger than the entire game, and you had to download them before you could even start the game.

But I'm hopeful

I am not that familiar with steam, but I would assume those people in charge over there, would know how big this game is, and allow for downloads to start maybe a week before release, then just release the unlock/activation, which could be a small file only.

If they wait until the 21st and the 24th (US and EU) then the server wont handle it. People will get upset and start spamming every forum they can find regarding Civ V how crappy the service to play is and that they paid in advance to get to play it on the day of release and so on.

Yeah, I just ordered the hard copy, 2 day delivery. I figure I will avoid at least 2 days of "server busy" hassle.

Recommended and required HDD space for the game is 8GB... so that's what it will most likely be, eh?

Steam doesn't download installers or packed files afaik, it just grabs the whole thing.

No, I doubt it will as you still have to connect to steam to activate the game. Gonna be a bucking nightmare for a few days. All massive game releases are on Steam.
