I am not that familiar with steam, but I would assume those people in charge over there, would know how big this game is, and allow for downloads to start maybe a week before release, then just release the unlock/activation, which could be a small file only.
Recommended and required HDD space for the game is 8GB... so that's what it will most likely be, eh?
Steam doesn't download installers or packed files afaik, it just grabs the whole thing.
I wonder this - I expect soundtrack and video from Deluxe edition to be 1-2 GB. Does this included in 8 GB required?
Hopefully, fewer than twelve hours for download. I figure if I begin the download at around 7 AM, I should be able to play the game at the end of the work day, around 5 PM...
I googled that same question about d2d, and came up with two seperate cases. In one case d2d gave you the key, and you entered it and downloaded from steam. In the other case you download an installer that included steam, and installed the game(and steam if you didn't have it yet). Let's hope it's just the key for this game!
Well just placed my Direct2 Drive order and can confirm you get the following
-nothing
Basically you get a picture of a disabled button saying 'pre order' where the download key button should be on a released game. I guess despite the game being steam locked D2D are planning to keep all the keys until release date so no even associating your purchase with steam acccount until then and hence no pre-download prior to release....
....guess thats why they're giving away the extra free DLC stuff :/
(will email D2D CS to confirm, otherwise just need to make sure I persuade someone I know to order direct from steam, they can then predownload and I'll grab a copy of the game files from them ready for release.)

A pre-load would be nice, they did that for Mass Effect 2.
who D2D or Steam?
Steam tend to always to preloads but if D2D are going to sit on the keys we'll be the only ones not getting one :/
I made the mistake of ordering empire: total war on release day, and while that game had a ton of issues, activating the game on release day was not one of them. That was pretty smooth. No, I doubt it will as you still have to connect to steam to activate the game. Gonna be a bucking nightmare for a few days. All massive game releases are on Steam.
