Before I tell you the current situation, let me give you the stats =

Difficulty - Regent
Size - Standard
Civs - 7
Continent - Pangea

Histograph score so far - 1107
Second place - 655

Anyway, I've been playing this game for about 9 hours. I have taken about 40% of the total land mass and my goal is to destroy all the civs. After defeating the Scandavians and the Celts, my next victim will be the Germans.

So I did what I always do - get an overwhelming amount of troops (at this point it's infantry) and about 5-6 units of siege (artillery).

As I marched my way towards Berlin, I swiftly wiped out any opposition by exploiting the AI's stupidities (like defending on a mountain and wait for them to attack me).

So then I reached Berlin. This capital rested on no strategic grounds (it rested on grasslands, and the land surrounding it was grasslands too) so the only advantage the defending nfantry would have is the slight defensive bonus cities offered.

So I took my 6 siege and attacked.....they all missed of course....because siege never works when you need it.

So I did the next best thing; I sent all 20 infantry to kill the petty defending single infantry to finally take over Berlin

My first infantry attacked...he did only one point of damage and then died.
My 2nd attacked....he got killed and did no damage
My 3rd attacked.....he also did one point of damge....

In the end ALL TWENTY of my infantry got killed while I only did 4 points of damage to ONE INFANTRY. I never knew superman was German.

This of course pisses me off because the defending infantry had only a SLIGHT defensive bonus (I think it was .3 or something).

As I sent my reinforcements (more infantry) to stop the oncoming infantry (because they attacked once they saw me weakened)...those infantry got slaughtered too.....it's almost as if the AI has an adavantage...nothing was swinging my way.

SO my question is = am I just having crap luck, or does the AI need to cheat more and more as the difficulty gets harder (putting the odds more in it's favor). If that's the case I lost respect for the creators of this game....for creating an AI thats needs to cheat instead of being smarter.

Either way....how many sheilds does superman cost?

First, you need way more siege units. Don't try and blame the RNG for you're being underprepared for war. Second, grassland offer a 10% bonus and the city bonus is hardly 'slight'. It was almost certainly 100%. This means your attack of eight was up against a defense of 23.5 . Third, attack odds are never in anyone's favor.

Add in hills, rivers, radar towers, and the fact that infantry actually attack at 6, and you are almost commiting :suicide:. ;)

EDIT: Welcome to CFC! [party]

Yes! Build more ARTILLERY! You get a stack of 50 of those, you'll be attacking a size 1 city with 1 hp/dead defenders. If you don't take the city in one turn, you'll have at least destroyed all of the improvements inside.

Since you're attacking with 1 movement units anyway, you can't complain about their sluggishness.

The irony is that if your stack had been 6 infantry and 20 artillery you probably would either have won or (after 20 artillery misses) wise enough to attack the nect turn instead.

hope the AI got a GL out of it!:D
j/k;)

Might check your calculations, though.
Fortified infantry in grassland city has something like D=18, which I wouldn't call a slight bonus in the first place with D=10 as base.

bonuses:
fortified: 25%
grasland: 10%
city size 7-12: 50%
city size 12+: 100%
attack over a river: 50%

So indeed as mentioned, likely to be 23.5 defence. (18.5 if the city was only size <12)

attack 6 vs def 23.5 has pretty small chances. He will get upgrades until he is elite, making it even more difficult.

Espescially the the opponent upgrading when he wins is a reason to try not attacking with win chances lower than 50% (equal attack and defence) and certainly not with chances lower than 25%.
Also attack only with full health veteran units.

All that said, it still is some bad luck. 20 vs 1 should have a reasonable chance of winning even if losing 19.

Note, many artillery not only reduce the opponent to 1 hitpoint, it also lowers the city population and thus the city defence bonus.

Infantry 8.12.1 (attack A, Deffence D, Move M)

A/((A+D)+fortedified (.5*12)+terrain grass (.1*12)+City size if 6-12(.5*12) or 13+ (1*12))=% to hit.

or

8/(20+6+1.2+6)=0.24096 or 24.1 in size 6-12

8/(20+6+1.2+12)=0.20408 or 20.4% in size 13+

So if they are fortedifed in a size 7-12 city you have a 24.1% chance of a hit.

In a size 13+ city 20.4% chance of a hit.

With that said you had a 1 in 4 chance in size 6-12 city or a 1 in 5 chance in size 13+. Not the best odds.

Conquests and vanilla I'm fairly sure that it's 6/1o for infantry.

The city was almost certainly size >12, as they had infantry and the AI likes to go for Sanitation, plus the city was probably their capital, which I think gives an additional 50% that I forgot to take into account earlier. And yes, infantry are 6/10/1.

I never attack infantry w/ infantry unless my arty has blasted it to 1hp and reduced the city to size 6.

A better use of the infantry while you brought up more arty would be to pillage the daylights out of the food tiles around this city. Starve 'em down and disconnect them from any luxes.

A city bombed silly, in revolt, and defended by shellshocked (1hp) units would be a better target for an infantry assault.

Since you're not attacking w/ tanks or cavalry armies you're certainly not in a hurry. Take your time and grind them down.
