Upper 30s (bordering dangerously on 'ancient') here. Been playing Civ since the first one in the early '90s (I still have the 3.5" floppys that Civ I came on). Civ is the only computer game I play with any regularity. A couple evenings per week, and maybe a bit on the weekend (if I don't have to go fishing or do yard/house work). There is just too much to do to play all kinds of games. Job, wife, house, not to mention all the fishing that needs to be done...

On a side note, there is quite a diverse group here. What a great game...

 Dooood....you were at AZ the same time as me brah. You're ancient but you have taken Civ to a whole other art form. Slinger level (tm)

Barb,

We shouldn't resent it. I find it funny! But my kids don't think of me as ancient, and they are older than a lot of the posters!

I'm six squared. Started gaming in the 70s on a proprietary console that no one knows any more, switched to the famed Atari VCS soon after. Proceeded through C64 and Atari ST until I bought my first PC in 1991 for - you guessed it - Civilization. Played every Civ or Sid game since then.

Civ 1 came out for the Atari ST in 1989, you could have saved money :p

Hmm, 1989 would have been two full years before the DOS release.

AFAIK the Atari ST version was released in 1993. It could get terribly slow in the endgame. A friend of mine had the Amiga version and couldn't complete many games because of crashes in the endgame, so he kind of envied me (and bough a PC shortly after ;) ).

I'm just curious: for you people over 18, do you play civ during work or on your own time? If you play it during work, I want to know where you work.

On my own time, usually instead of sleeping. Sleep is for the weak. ;)

Guys, where has you sense of humor gone?
The statistics tell us, that the majority of the gamers in the world are well beneath "ancient" line, so the author was just fooling arround with the world, didn't mean it really.
The point about Civ is, that it's not just a computer game, it's a unique game which develops and encourages some intensive brain activity. Such games, unlike the shooters (the real passion of most of the gamers), are popular amongst "aged" comunity, becuse. naturally, "ancient" and "pre-ancient" gamers seek for inteliectual challenges more than for adrenaline bombs. It's almost a hormonal thing :crazyeye:
But seriously, aren't we as young/old as we feel ourselves?
Personally, at age of 23 I am a college student, have a job, a boyfriend (yeah, I'm a girl, am I some kind of weirdo? :mischief: ), volunteer in educational projects, play civ and feel younger than 10 years ago. I'm just starting to live a real life: independency, self confidence, mature attitude etc. Obviously, today I'm much more complete as a person, than I was in my teens. As far as I can see, the real enjoyment just begins (yeah, I'm a remediless optimist too, know that  ), so when will I play if not now?! :goodjob:
For all the ancient folks: guys, you rock!!! :king:
You shouldn't defend yourselves, you should be proud!!
Not losing your spirit and got buried under "adult life's" punches and shakes deserves profound admiration! :worship:
I really hope that decades from now I'll be still able to put all the petty troubles aside for a moment, relax and allow myself to have some fun. :):band:

I may be close to ancient, but got to pop my cherry on CIV I when some of these young'uns were watching Sesame Street. They'll never know the trill of playing CIV for the FIRST time ever, not just for the first time on the fourth installment :)

Age has nothing to do with being a gamer. You just do not have any life experience to draw upon to make some of the comments you have made.

Married, two kids and a dog.

Captain for a Fire Dept. A full time schedule is 10-24 hour shifts a month. With 20 days off a month I have plenty of time to be a family man, play with the dog, get on the computer and game, game and play more games.

I am retired and play about 6-7 hours a day while my honey is slaving away at her business.

I'm surprised how few under-18's there are playing civ (less than 10%). It seems that civ fans have "grown up" on average a bit over the years. Does this mean that civ is picking up rather few new followers? Or is it too complex for most under-18's? Very strange.

By the way, I'm 21 (will be 22 in a few weeks' time) and started playing Civ1 when I was 11.

On my own time, but they wouldn't mind if I played it at work. It's not like the rest of the guys I work with never play games at work.
