How quickly do barbarian cities grow?

Other Random Barbarian Facts ( I should really write a FAQ on them)

1) When they first have cities, they build walls, then castles, to culturally expand.

2) They will build courthouses when that becomes available (they care about their economy!)

3) They will never plan for hitting a happiness or health cap. But when they do, if left unmolested, they will build something to get around it.

4) They appear to have the following civics.

No State Religion
Mercantilism
Hereditary Rule
Barbarism till nationhood is available
Slavery

Its quite interesting to play around with the worldbuilder. Put some spies into the barbarian cities and watch them :)

Btw. as a sidenote, spies are NOT invisible...if you place them into a barb city and a civ is near with which you had no contact, they will "see" the spy and make contact with you. Don't know if thats a bug (of course, in a normal game this would most likely not happen :)

Wow, this thread sure took off. JerichoHill, about learning tech/jumping eras, have you ever seen barbarian soldiers higher than rifles/grenadiers? I figure if anyone has, you would? ;)

Basically I think that the minute a barb city sees any player or AI civs ts basically starts pumping out units and forgets growth.
Which returns me to my OP...I've got a spear & archer combo parked right on the doorstep of this barb city, occasionally picking off the extra warriors it spawns (good for XP!!) But it's still size 1...will it never reach size 2 if I don't move my units out??

It will eventually, unless they have no food at all. Check which tile the city is working, and you can guess how many turns it will take.

An alternative idea is to leave the city alone, fortify your units somewhere nearby, but outside the visible range, like 4 tiles or something. Then you have a chance to get a free worker and perhaps a few improved tiles around as well, like farms/pastures for faster growth. Of course, if you can afford to wait a little while.

This is the most advance i've ever found a barbarian city. they had their own nice little island.

That's a sweet little city...aqueduct and colisseum! Never saw those in barb cities before. I'd keep it as is and dedicate it as a National Preserve, if I ever found a city like that.

And the barb city in my game hit pop 2 just one turn after I posted. :goodjob: Thought about letting it grow, but Hatty's expanding in that area and I didn't want to lose it to her.

I have yet to see them advance further than rifleman and grenadiers but that doesnt mean it isnt possible, since they do research tech, but slowly

the best bet would be a terra map with raging barbs...ill do a game but start the barbs up with 6 cities, give them workers, and give them all techs up to rifleman and grenadiers

maybe theyd last long enough for me to see what they do

if a barb city is close, can you just leave it alone and take it through culture allowing all thier improvements to be yours and any stray units sent out would be promotions? would they stop improvements when they saw your borders...

cool. so they will not build improivements when close to my city, just units. i can use these for promotions. will i take them through culture expansion or can i leave them until i don't want the extra promotions any longer?

i like the idea of using this promotion factory if you will, to better prepare my troops during peace time. i was just wondering how it would work, if it would even be worth it.

Biggest barb city i ever foudn was Hun, size 25 (!!!!!!) on Earth map, Mp me playing as Juluis Caesar, a friend (ICBM's on thsi forum) playing as Ghenghis. I had to Draft uinits because the "It's too crowded" peanalty was causing problems.Used units drfated to conquer Tharcioan (somethng like that) Jute and Hittite.Improvments were mostly watrermills and farms (it was in an area with 2 rivers in the centre of the continent)

Has anybody noticed the AI's tendancy to nuke barbarians? I was playing a large terra and everybody was too busy having wars to develop the new continent. Once we got nukes and the world map got revealed, all the AI leaders repeatedly fired their nukes at the barb citys, despite having far more important wars in their homelands.

LOL!!!!! Glowing Radioactive Mutant Barbarians!!

I'm a little upset...in my newest game as Mansa (Large, Snaky Continents, 7 civs) I didn't ONE single barb city!! Maybe it's because I discovered Astronomy LONG before anyone else (my explorer popped it from a hut...nearly pissed myself) and settled all the outlying islands before the AI could even send caravels out? I didn't find any guarded huts, either...just regular goodie ones.

Well...I don't think the research, but I'm pretty sure they can get religions.

Yes they research. In a Terra game, it's pretty common to see barbs that are Riflemen. They have to engage in research to get to that point.

I've seen a few barbarian golden ages. But I use a mod that makes them almost raging all the time. When I get on my CIV capable computer later I'll see if I have a screenshot.

doesn't that remind you of the AI's war tactic? aside from the fact that barbs have less to work. Though I honestly think that AI warfare involves ratios between offensive/defensive units much like the barbs 1:3 ratio

Do barbs Produce Military like hell if their on raging Barbs? & r left alone???

Well that's kind of the idea behind Raging, it means there's more of them.
