How to change Score-list name from "You"?

Hello.

Almost a year has passed since I managed to install this game for the first time.

Now I managed to get through the Steam-hassle (luckily :D ) to install it again.

After having started up my first game since christmas, I find that my name in the Score-list on-screen to the right is not "Harald Bluetooth," but the really boring "You."

How do I change this. I have been looking through the options, but haven't found any place to change the name. One "should" be able to expect that such a natural thing was openly available (and intuitive to do) since Civ V is a later game than Civ IV (in which there is no problem changing the name to anything I want).

And if I may: How do you set your commerce to go into Research instead of Gold?
I have found no clue as to where I must go inside the game to accomplish that, unfortunately. So I crawl along with the speed of a turtle...

Hm. Also I have not been able to locate the technology that opens up what would be called "Slavery" in Civ IV. The ability to sacrifice population for production. I haven't seen it among the "Social Policies" either. One possibility is that I'm turning blind, another that the option doesn't exist in this game. If anyone can tell me if it does indeed exist or not, I would be able to stop looking for it...

PS!
I have tried to look through some War Academy articles, but have not found the answers to my two questions above, yet. If anyone has a link to an article, I would be much appreciative (since I would save a lot of time wasted reading through a lot of text I'm not interested in as of now...).

PS 2!
And I do intend to learn this game now. It's just that I'm so stuck in Civ IV that I am shocked to see the Granary is nerfed to just give +2 Food, instead of saving 50% of food upon Growth. I see you need an Aqueduct to store 40% food when growing. This is illogical. It makes no sense to me. An Aqueduct leads water, hence it increases growth of crops (+ 2 Food), while a Granary stores food (keep food after growth).
I really wish they could've used Spock as an advisor here... then I'm sure Granary and Aqueduct would've switched their bonuses...99.999% certain, in fact!

I'll try and answer (from memory though, so please forgive any errors)

1. You can set your name in the screen at the start of the game set-up where it shows the list of civs and you are at the top by default - I think there's an edit button in the panel? Haven't done this since I first changed it, so memory may be wrong!

2. Research into gold? I never played Civ 4 but there is no such mechanism that I'm aware of in CiV. Beakers per turn is a function of pop and science buildings, gold per turn is from tile working, trades and any gold bonus buildings e.g. markets (and trade connections of course). The only thing vaguely similar that I can think of is that you can choose to turn a city's production to either gold or research (assuming you have learned the techs), but it's not very efficient as I think you only get about 25% conversion of hammers.

3. 'Slavery': you can (and should) control what the citizens are doing i.e. what tiles they are working/what specialist slots they are filling - you do this from the city screen (it's on the RHS above the buildings details).

I hope this helps?

- Snip [something about game elements being illogical in real life] Snip -

You may "build" science (in the civ4 sense) once you hit education. URL="http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/Education_(Civ5)"][/URL]. Note that however, you only convert something like 25% of your production into beakers. If you feel the game is too slow, play on a faster game speed, and work on your diplomacy so that you can enter research agreements more often. Also, preserving jungle tiles once you hit the mid-renaissance (uh, I forgot which exact tech, so someone can correct/add to this) will net you extra science for each jungled tile you work.

You do not have "commerce" in Civ 5. Your tiles, trade routes, buildings will all yield raw gold :c5gold:. You may have noticed the absence of the good old "slider". This is because there is no longer a resource/currency to pour through the slider.

Slavery does not exist in Civ5 (in terms of sacrificing population for instant production).

As for complaining about game elements not making any sense: this is ultimately a game that is fairly easily (once you get the hang of knowing how to do it, as you can't just copy-paste-replace .XML files like in Civ4) modifiable, so your best recourse would be to swap the effects of Aqueducts and Granaries yourself ;) (Or you could try hunting down a mod that does what you want.... but realistically, by the time you find one, you might as well have invested your time into changing it yourself )

Hello.

A big thank you to Imperial Archon, NiceOneEmlyn and Walter R!

Aha,
No slavery... check
No Commerce, raw Gold instead...check
Can build Gold/Research (although, at an abysmal 25% rate, ouch)...check
No slider...check
But can still turn Gold into Research (Research Agreement)...check

I started a game on Settler (HEY, no laughing, it's my first attempt in ten months to learn the game mechanics here... :p )

Despite having an abysmal 60 Research-points, or thereabouts, my research is actually going quite well (said the one playing on Settler :crazyeye: ). I've had one Research Agreement (once I found out that they were actually any good), but I don't know how much Research I did gain from it when it ended (where do you find that in-game?)

Having tons of Gold is not as huge a waste as I thought it would be. I gather so much wealth that it's insane. But it saved me one time, as I found out I could buy units in cities without having Universal Suffrage (oh, Civ IV refuses to leave my indoctrinated "how-to-play-civ" brain...). That saved an otherwise undefended city as a barbarian approached.

And, yes, I found out how to control what tiles my citizens work. That's the same as in Civ IV, as far as I have seen.

One thing I found out as well is that I have to actually research Archery in this game...and not for building Archers...(that's actually an improvement from Civ IV, one of few, I might add...but at least they exist). Archers, by the way, seems to be one of the worst units in this game. In Civ IV they were great city defenders. But here they are eaten alive by a lowly Warrior. The exact opposite of what I'm used to...(you just walk up to a barbarian Archer, and it's no use for him to have ranged attack. He's just so weak, seriously!)

As for exchanging the effects of Granaries and Aqueduct - If someone could be so kind to point me to the thread where that can be learned, I'd appreciate it very much. I will, of course, continue to read some War Academy articles, but a direct route to the information I now crave is most welcome... :) )

Well, next up is... Social Policies, I guess. Any tips as to why you would NOT want to save up enough Culture to get Commerce and that +3 P in each coastal city as soon as possible? (forgot the name of it right now, of course... )

Yours Sincerely
