How to colonize, if you have warlords upon your door?

Hi Civmates,

I'm just playing an interesting game and have some difficulties...

so I request a good tip of yours...

Situation:

I will/ have colonized the Ilands in the mid [look at the map] and Katherina did so, too...

Finally she thinks about grabbing the colonies of mine, because i have no defence at all and not the new weapons used in this ages...

[katharina has got chemistry and so she has the ability to build frigates and more advanced privates [found it in the dictionary]....]

{as you see I'm from germany playing the first version without addons, but with all patches ;)}

Is there a way to influence other players to stay peaceful, because If i had the possibility to develop these cities i would surely win the game...?

My ideas:

Trade technologies to get Nationalism and gunpowder to defend myself by making troops out of the population...

The other way would be bringing troops to the colonies...

But I've only got Sworsman, Axemen, some catapults and crossbowmen there... (of course I saved the money instead of spending it on these things...)

Maybe my neighbors will declare war, if I remove them from my borders [They are all in other wars, too, but the did so acentury ago, although the had lost about three times before] (Montezuma is really crazy, Napoleon, too...)

That's the story - need a good tip...

bye,

If you give them something, a tech or gold (maybe a map haven't tested it) you get a 10 turn peace treaty.

Ways to improve relations

Change you civics to their favorite civic (this can be found in the info screen of the Foriegn Relations tab)
Give them techs or trade at a heavy favor on their side
Vote for them in Elections
Trade resources (takes a while to develop)
Change religion to their religion

My strategy would be to get gunpowder ASAP, and then break off the island as a colony. It will automatically have 2 musketmen per city as a new colony. Improve relations with Kat through the methods mentioned above, and then focus your efforts on the mainland to take out Monty and Napoleon.

The already developed cities of Monty and Napoleon will make a much better base to compete with Kat, and you don't have to pay the extra fees for a city off of your mainland.

And you have to fight them anyway as both Monty and Napoleon will constantly attack you even if you're at Pleased Status.

I solved the problem through some turns without technological progress, so that I could get better units, which I brought to the cost, so that i had them on the islands quickly...

Before katharina came, i had come, no chance for her...

She agreed to give me gold for a peace treaty, I don't know why. Anyway i got technologies for a good army and captured Paris and destroyed Montezuma...

Yet I have to take my cannons [3], privates [~10] and cavalry [3] to take Antium and Rome, but he's not that kind leaving low units in his citys and he has partners... {What in fact is the problem}

I fear that the others will battle against me, if I attack only another single city or even declare war...

Another problem is culture - I have too less and so the Chinese force me back...

The next difficulty is that my trade partners for goods refused to trade with my any longer, that makes my people angry and ill, of course...

I'm in winning position, but on what aspect should I concentrate?

War or development?

Bye,

PS: kat now runs for a cultural victory...

Do you know, whether a city which is hitten by an ICBm loses culture, if it is not destroyed?

This is my plan against that...
