Hi,

I started my first serious game and got stranded on an island. At around 1000 AD I got Caravels and was able to sail the sea. Then I discovered some free land but I couldn't get a Settler in a boat !!!! The documentation said only scouts, Great People etc can get in a Caravel..............

How on earth can I get a settler in a boat to colonize another island/continent ?

Thanks,

Coen

How stupid !? :(

Even Columbus sailed to the America's in Caravels. Not quite accurate with history and quite a nuisance too.

:hmm: I got a settler in a Galley, along with an archer for escort. So I don't see how it could be any different with a caravel?

Caravels can carry certain kinds of units, like explorers and missionaries.
Galleys can carry two of any kind, but can't enter ocean squares like the caravels.

I like the limitations, myself--it forces over-ocean expansion to wait until late in the game, when you discover astrology (I believe that's the tech).

The galley and galleon are both troop-carrying vessels. The caravel is not. It can carry individuals, like the explorer and missionary, which helps out nicely with the map exploration and religious expansion which is generally going on at that stage in the game.

Eldar, Indeed you can load units in your galley but you can not travel accross ocean.
With your caravelle, you can only load a scout, explorer, misionnary, a spy or a great people!
if you want to load a settler et cross the ocean, Galleon is what you need;

It makes sense historically if you think about it. Columbus did sail in a caravel, sure, but did he bring with him a few hundred men, women and children to start a settlement? No, he was an explorer bringing with him a few dozen men and charting new lands. I think it's fantastic that you can't bring settlers in caravels, it sets up the game so there is a "colonization" period once astronomy comes into play.

Personally, I prefer the "chance of sinking" from Civ2. Astronomy's pretty far off, if you've got a bad starting position you could be out of luck. I love finding ways around challenges, but I hate hopeless starts.

Remember, the Polynesian's sailed the sea on fleets of canoes!

Columbus was an explorer not a settler, so the history's probably right :). You can explore to your heart's content wth your caravel. .

A bit annoying in the game though. I agree.

Ok stop bashign the guy I think he gets it now :/ I personally dont like Conquistadores being a knight replacement instead of an explorer replacement. If it was an Explorer that can attack, spanish would be a pretty good Civ for certain period.

Christoforo Columbo was an exporer, not a settler. explorers can use caravels.
