How to install a mod (again)

There is no Steam folder in Library/Application Support.
Why? And how do I get it there. Running mac 10.8.3 Civ 5 G&Ks

I'm sure you are not incompetent. :)

The example I described in the link from the FAQ was the PerfectWorld map script, which just happened to be the first mod anyone asked for help with installing. But the principles are the same for any mod:

1 Download the mod and expand it to produce a single folder containing all the files and folders for the mod

2 Put the folder in the Civ5 MODS folder in the appropriate location

3 If you haven't already done so, enable the Mods menu option in Civ5

In detail:

Step 1: Mods typically come as .zip files or .civ5mod files. Ez7z expands either of these. A .zip file can also be expanded in the Finder, just by double clicking it.

Step 2: Mods may come as a variety of different file and folder structures depending on what they are trying to achieve. The PerfectWorld mod expanded to two separate files, and these had to be put into a single folder to be installed. The .zip file at your link expands to a single folder containing Art, Assets and XML sub-folders, plus two .xml files and a .modinfo file. The single folder containing all those bits is what you need to move into the Civ5 MODS folder.

There are a number of challenges when you are looking for the MODS folder on your Mac. These are all detailed in the various links from the FAQ, but here they are in one place.

You need to know that '~/' is a shortcut for '/Users/<your_name>/'

If you are running the Steam version then your MODS folder is probably in ~/Documents/Aspyr/Sid Meier's Civilization 5/.

If you are running the Civ5 Campaign Edition, purchased from the Apple App Store, then your MODS folder is in ~/Library/Application Support/Civilization V Campaign Edition/. If you are running OS X 10.7 (Lion) then your ~/Library folder is hidden. The simplest way to open it is to select the Go->Go to Folder... menu item in Finder. Type or copy/paste ~/Library/Application Support into the text box and hit return.

Step 3: Where is the Civ5 file you need to edit to enable the Mods menu?

If you are running the Steam version then the file is at ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/SteamApps/common/sid meier's civilization V/assets/UI/FrontEnd/MainMenu.lua

If you are running the App Store Campaign Edition then the file is embedded in a package at /Applications/Civilization V Campaign Edition. Select this "file", right click it, and select "Show Package Contents". The file you have to edit is then at: Contents/Home/assets/UI/FrontEnd/MainMenu.lua. You need to change permissions on this file and its parent folder to allow you to edit it.

Hi, welcome :wavey:

That post is old. See post #20 in the same thread. It is not practical to run around the entire forum trying to eliminate old instructions that are no longer correct as a result of changes to the product.

Please read my current summary of the steps required to install Civ5 mods on a Mac. As far as I know this is correct as of today's versions of the software.

If you have G&K installed on the Mac I don't think you need this step in your guide:

"Finally, go to this post by Iamgoofball and follow his instructions to replace the file:

Contents/Home/assets/UI/FrontEnd/Modding/InstalledPanel.xml"

All I did was put the two hyphens in front of the line in both MainMenu.lua files and I have the Mods menu back and able to select the mods I've manually installed.

Alan H-
I have read the link that you posted on how to bring Workshop mods to your Civ 5 for mac. Following your instructions earlier in the thread, I was able to actually get my Civ 5 game to open up the mods option in the main menu. I was also able to download a mod from this website and install it. It shows up as an option when I load the game as well. I'll let you know if I can get the steam work shop mods to work for me as well. Thank you so much for this. I've searched for MONTHS to get this to work for me. If it works, I would like to post your link around. You've been a great help.

Hi, welcome :wavey:

Good to hear it's working for you. I have no problem with you linking to my current instructions. I try to keep them up to date whenever changes occur.

I figured out the steam mods! And Keka makes it super simple to take care of.

Well done! As you can see from some other posts, not everyone figures it all out.

Hi! I'm not sure if anyone can assist me with my problem in this thread, but if you can, please help :)
I have edited my Civ V application's menu.lua code so I can access the 'Mods' button in the main menu of the game, but every time that I go back and try to play the game, the 'Mods' button doesn't appear.
For some unknown reason (which might be related to the mods button problem), my Civ V application is labeled 'Gods & Kings' instead of 'Civilization V', so I think that maybe Steam isn't recognizing G&K as the Civ V copy to run, so it doesn't run that copy, but runs another Civ V copy that I have yet to find that doesn't have the menu.lua file edited; even after I have searched for several hours over continuous periods of time.
I have installed and uninstalled Civ V many many times on this computer to try to this problem, but so far, nothing is working.
Clicking the G&K copy shows up with a message telling me that Steam isn't open, even when I have it open and on the Civ V homepage on Steam.
Also, I have made sure that G&K is enabled in every way it can be (as far as I know).

Thanks for your time.

I saw this message when you first posted it elsewhere. I couldn't offer any suggestions then, and I hoped someone else might have some ideas.

All I can say now is:

1. The Civ5 application does get various names according to what expansions you have installed.

2. Unless you have been messing with your Steam system, I doubt if there are two copies of Civ5 on your hard drive.

3. Most of us have Brave New World installed. It sounds as if you have not bought that expansion. At one point a year or more ago, there was a time when there were two MainMenu.lua files in the package - the one in the main Assets folder, and another in a subfolder called "Expansion" or something similar. Both had to be edited. Maybe that's still the case if you haven't upgraded to Brave New World?

BTW Cross posting is generally not recommended.

I just moved the copy of Civ 5 into another folder, and when trying to launch the game in steam, it didn't launch and steam gave me an error. So, that shows that this copy is the one that steam uses.
I don't have BNW, so I did what you said and I found the 'expansion' file, but I haven't found any other MainMenu.lua files. I did, however, find a MainMenu.xml file. I am unfamiliar with what I do next, and I don't think anything in this file is similar to the .lua file. Can anyone help me?

Thanks for your help so far. I apologize for cross posting, it won't happen again.

Edit: Anyone going to continue to help? I have no idea what to do from here, help would be very appreciated.
