How to manually destroy buildings in your cities?

I seem to remember in earlier Civ versions the ability to destroy outdated/costly city buildings. When my city is at pop 20+, do I really need that granary?

Does that exist in Civ 4? And, more importantly, should I?

There's no benefit to destroying buildings in Civ4, because they don't cost you anything to maintain. So they didn't provide the option.

The Granary is quite valuable in a large city, which otherwise takes a long time to grow to the next size. And it also improves your health level.

You're posting in the wrong forum; this one is for strategy articles only. The place to post short questions about the game is here:

My bad. thanks for setting me straight on the right forum. Sorry all!!

hmm what about with a coal plant and u get a hydro plant later on?
Still would be good if u would be able to get rid of it , or does it automaticly replaces it with the hydro plant?

If you have a source of clean power (hydro plant), then you don't get an adverse health effect from the coal plant.

But, in theory, you might want to get rid of your coal plant,, and give up its benefits, in order to avoid the health penalty. The game doesn't give you that option.

There is one benefit to destroying buildings and thats to deny the enemy of their use before an inevitable capture. Shame its not an option.

I think that's rather a good thing, myself. The game would be less fun if the AIs all razed all of their buildings the turn before you took them over. It's already true that it takes a long time to make a captured city productive. If you make capturing cities more and more useless, you can create huge disincentives to fight, and I think there are already enough of those.

Heh, the game is subliminally teaching us all to be multi-religious pacifists.

you also can't pillage your own tile improvements

I quite like using scorched earth tactics at times - but you need to be careful because really you want to take your city back!!

I've mentioned this in my firaxis poll - put it in yours too if you havn't already!

False, you can pillage your own tiles.

You don't get any money for it (which is a good thing, because otherwise you could run your whole economy with a massive pool of workers building improvements which you then pillage!).

You really should be able to destroy your own cities.

I think this presents the same problem as destruction of buildings in cities: Do you really want the AI to raze every city that you threaten, as soon as you move a stack in range that's big enough to capture it? Would that make the game more fun? Would it be "realistic"? I'd have to say no, on all counts.

I'd personally like to destroy one or two national wonders in cities where their presence prevents me from building later ones.

With GreenMod you can raze cities and national wonders. But of course this costs money! In 1.8 you will also be able to raze cathedral class buildings. I doubt there is any use of destroying the coal power plant, because you get nuclear power plant just a few techs later.

Makes sense. I hope Sevo adds GreenMod to his group mod, then.
