Well, I just completed my first monarch game(victory thru conquest in 1600 AD, pangea, smallest land area, persia(but had no iron until knights)).

... and I am trying to use different ideas from different threads... But I just understood, that I do not know how to 'pop rush' in early ages(or later ages).

I've seen threads containing texts like: 'We built barracks in all production towns, some at the cost of 1 citizen and built libraries in most border towns, some at the cost of 2 citizens".

How do I do that? I know I can 'pop rush' important units or buildings, but People will become unhappy, if I do that.

How do I choose town what to poprush from? Recently captured town??? high Size town?

What is use of pop rushing? I get unit faster but i get 2 negative things Population loss and Angry population.

How long are citizens unhappy if I rush? Does rushing unhappines stack?

I am sorry, if there have been threads discussing it, when I used google search, I only found discussion about civ4...

I don't poprush very much, but here's what I can tell you:

You can only poprush if you're in certain governments (despotism, feudalism, fascism, communism, did I forget any, or are all of those right?).

In terms of button-clicking, you poprush just like you cash-rush: by clicking the "hurry production" button.

Each citizen provides 20 shields towards the build project, but they're considered "tainted" shields, so you won't be able to switch to a Great Wonder after pop-rushing a library (I'm pretty sure . . . )

Yes, people get unhappy when you whip ("We cannot forget the cruel oppression you have bore down upon us.")

I don't know if it stacks.

The rest I leave for those who know more about poprushing than I do.

The same way you cash rush. There is a little button next to the production project inside the city view, above the food box, that allows you to rush the current project.

#Each pop is worth 20 shields. (if you need 21 to complete the project you'll use up 2 pop)
#with 0 shields in the bin, you need double. So rushing a barracks, (40 shields) from scratch costs 4 pop instead of 2)
#you can not whip more than half the pop in a city, so you'd need a town with 4 pop to rush a barracks with less than 20 shield in the bin. But you can work around that by "short rushing", if you first whip a spear, then switch to rax, and whip again (without hitting next turn) you need only 3 pop in the city to rush those rax.
#Each pop ads +1 unhappiness effect for 20 turns, and it ads 20 turns to the time it takes for all unhappiness to disappear.

Fascism, but it is so easy to forget it ...

It does, but the effects of a whip rush disappear after 20 turns.

The trick is to use it ... for things that accelerate your growth, or give you happiness. Basically, I very often use the whip to get the 20 last shields of my granaries. Also, if i am religious, it may be useful to pop those 30 shields temples in the outer cities of the empire, to expand the borders and make the AI settle elsewhere.

And of course, if you are going for 100k, feudalism and massive pop-rushing are the way to go. :)

Oops! crosspost with MAS!

#Each pop ads +1 unhappiness effect for 20 turns, and it ads 20 turns to the time it takes for all unhappiness to disappear.
I didnt know that . Do the durations also stack!?

If I never pop-rush again, I'll be happy! I got a bellyful of pop-rushing during C-Bob03. It actually is useful for some things, as mentioned by MAS and Mursi, and the unhappiness can be dealt with through several methods (luxes, specialists, no war weariness, low population, etc.) Plus while time doesn't heal all wounds, it does heal some. Just whip the unhappy so and so's! It isn't for the faint of heart, but then neither is this game....

I've made an overview of the Govs in Civ3 complete.

Despotism, Feudalism, Fascism and Communism have the 'force labor' option instead of the 'pay citizens' option to hurry contructions/units.
Bigger constructions cost more citizens and sometimes there aren't enough citizens, but your advisor will tell that
I mostly use it when I'm in Communism.
When I've captured a city, I keep some units in it to stop the revolt.
Next turn - or a few turns later, but asap - I build a Granary or Temple, by whipping people.
The good thing is that you whip foreign people and not your own. By reducing their pop the chance of a culture flip is highly reduced.
that can be more reduced by adding your workers (citizens).
If done correctly under Communism, you can take over an entire continent, have ~0% chance of revolt (there are not many original citizens left) and have big (adding your citizens) productive (police HQ) cities. At the cost of no gold (whipped people).

You can pop-rush units in earlier stages of the game by having productive cities building only workers, and joining them for pop-rushing units in a couple barrack improved cities, while increasing lux slider and running science at 0% to keep population happy and gold flowing. This is very usefull in multiplayer online games if you want to rush someone with a turn 100 stack of doom. The ICS layout works best for this type of warmongering play.

How long are citizens unhappy if I rush? Does rushing unhappines stack?

this has been said before but i don't recall where, so i will say it again.

pop-rush unhappiness does stack. if you whip 5 citizens you will get 5 unhappinesses and they will decrease by one every 20 turns. after 100 turns it will all wear off. the same applies to draft unhappiness. it you have both kinds of unhappiness then one of each will wear off per 20 turns. Of course drafting followed by disbanding has a similar effect to whipping.
