How to promote units? (Seriously...)

I know it sounds ridiculous, but can anyone tell my how to promote my units?

As soon as one of my units reached sufficient experience to be promoted, a new window appears next to the unit status in the lower left corner. I can usually choose from 2 or 3 promotions but when I click on them nothing happens. So how exactly do I promote a unit? Do I have to confirm the promotion in some way? Is there a probably a way to do it with a keyboard shortcut?

Any help would be greatly appreciated...

Clicking on the promotion icons should work; there's no trick to it. If that's not working, something is wrong.

So, it's fixed

I remebered that the download via steam interrupted several times so I deleted the game and downloaded it again, this time in one piece. Now I can promote and sound is working, too.

Also, you must be in your own territory before promoting. Otherwise the promotion button will be grayed out.

No, you certainly don't have to be in your own territory to promote, I've had scouts that haven't been home for thousands of years get promotions. I don't think there's anything you have to be in your own territory to do to units, even upgrading only requires friendly territory now (open borders, friendly/allied CS).

Confirmed. You may promote anywhere. In fact the heal instantly promotion is useful for this when you are all beat up outside of an enemy's city.

Like I said, that was true in Civ4 but not in Civ5. You only need to be in friendly territory to upgrade, not just your own. An allied or friended city state, or anyone you have open borders with has worked fine for me.

You have to be in friendly teritory in order to upgrade your units, but you can promote them anywhere.
