Hi all, I can't seem to select any religion other than 'no state religion'. If I select chrisitianity (or any other!) in F7 it just says 'cannot convert to christianity'.

I'm playing as the English and I've discovered all the religious techs so I'm a bit stumped.

TIA

discovered or founded? I have always founded at least religion and adopted the first one... however I would think to convert you have to have at least one religion in your capital...

1. Does any of your cities have any religion? If yes, you should be able to switch to that state religion. If not, you can't.

2. Have you been in anarchy recently (or done a civic swith as a spiritual civ)? If so, you have to wait a few turns before being able to switch again (changing state religion is like any other civic change - it produces anarchy).

That's the only two possible situations I can imagine.

I guess you didn't found a religion and have no religion in any of your cities. That's the only thing that stops you from making a religion your state religion.

If you found a religion it will give you a prompt to convert, so i guess you haven't founded one...

You need to have a religion present in at least one of your cities to convert, but the first thing that came to mind was that you might have selected the Free Religion civic, which prevents you from having a state religion but boosts science output and gives extra happiness for every religion present in each city (so get spreading them and build any shrines you can).

I think he missed the part about discovering the religious techs FIRST. sure you can discover them, but if everyone else gets them before you, well that leaves you SOL. check on these techs:
first in meditation for buddhism
first in polytheism gets hinduism
first in monotheism gets judaism
first in theology gets christianity
first in code of laws gets confucianism
first in devine right gets islam
first in philosophy gets taoism

you can get more than one but get at least one.

Even if you don't found any religions that in no way prevents you from having a state religion - you just need a religion to be present in one of your cities. If the other civs founded all the religions, make sure you're connected to their trade networks in order to allow religion spreading.

Make sure you ppick the religeon of one of your allies though, It helps a lot with keeping them civil, don't waste your religeon on some one you will be going to war with soon...

One interesting Idea, found as many religions as you can on an island map (1 per team) this way you will deny many civilizations the benefits of religion for a large portion of the game...

Thanks for all your input guys, it has helped.
I discovered the religions, but I didn't found any of them. I'm alone on an island and I have only just met the Russians, so that probably explains why I haven't been able to select any religion thus far.

Thanks again guys :)
