Interesting... but Japs stocky? I know way too many Japones err Japanese that are stick thin.... maybe it's just the Japanese youth today...
Japan's education system is notorious for glossing over bad events in Japanese history and glorifying the good events or even twisting the bad events INTO good events. If you know what I mean.
I think in a good number of countries they might think their country is the best or that their people are the best, but the Japanese try to teach it that way too.

One of my criminal justice professors, who worked in Japan as a US drug agent, once said that Japan was one of the most racist countries he's been to. Not against Americans or Europeans but against other Asians. It's also something you hear from Chinese and Koreans a lot.

I've heard about the seperated toes thing before, and it makes some sense to me. I have a pair of geta (sandles) that I wear for festivals about once a year and they wreak havoc on my toes.
And yes, Japan can be a quite horrifically racist country when it comes to the rest of Asia. Most people aren't nasty about it, they've just grown up constantly being fed the idea that Asia is dirty and unsafe, and that most serious crime is committed by Japan's large Korean or Chinese community. Part of it is just an inevitable result of Japan's much higher standard of living, part of it is the hate-filled history of the region, and part of it is the government and the police scapegoating and telling tales to help them grab more power.

a) not always, and b) we would still need to be able to tell our allies and our enemies apart. In Europe we used words, here it wasn't possible because neither the Chinese nor Japanese spoke our language or a language similar to ours.
