I tried searching for this, but no luck. When all these assassins are running around your SoD, and picking off all of your cats and adepts and other weak units, what's the defense against this? What unit or promotion can you include that will fight them instead of letting them at the weak units?

edit, posted in wrong place. have asked mods to move it :o

guardsman promo is the counter to the marksman promo (think royal guard, or bannor). Otherwise, counterattack! Maelstrom for example can damage incoming assassins, so they won't be able to kill even an adept.

The meaning of the title becomes a little bit altered when you post it in the offtopic section. :)

yeah ive found the only way to counter assassins is too kill them with your assassins first. maelstrom works great too. other than that there is no easy way to do it. luckily the AI doesn't spam assassins like we do. another way is yvain, if you have him. he has very low defense priority since he is a channeler 3 caster so this makes him defend against assassins on occasion.

assassin's last words, "hey, I'll just hide behind this big mossy tree until i have a good shot at those mages over there."
(read this somewhere, can't remember who i'm stealing it from)

Stoneskin for mages really helps in defense.
Pro-active seeking out enemy assassins with your assassins.
Royal Guardsmen in a stack (need Aristocracy civic)
Awareness: if the A.I.'s got assassins, then mages, wizard, etc. have to be careful and protected as above.
Maelstrom happens to be a favorite of mine since the Ljos have a headstart with their Palace Air mana (Maelstrom being a Level II Air spell) and are likely to have Maelstrom anyway without detouring for just one enemy unit type - the tactic is just to call lightnings down, damage the enemy, and either take the Assassin out with followup melee attacks or let the wounded s.o.b. attack at a disadvantage.

If you play with raging barbarians you should be able to troll for enough experience to gain all the needed upgrades to get to Guardsman on a few key units. Plus, most civs will prefer to run Aristocracy eventually, and Royal Guards are incredibly effective defenders.

Guardsman is a very poor counter to assassins. They end up defending even when they are weak, meaning a axemen can suicide on the stack and leave the defender (even relatively strong ones) easy prey.

Depends on whether you play FfH or Fall Further.

Fall Further makes Guardsmen defend first always.

Fall from Heaven base makes Guardsmen more likely to defend, but they're not first in line. Guardsman is actually one of the things that I like best about Royal Guard units. Guardsmen, high defense in cities, blazingly fast 5 movement with just 5XP, free culture where you need it most, and Bronze/Iron/Mithril enabled all team up to make the Royal Guard actually worth their insanely high hammer cost.
