It seems that the one on the offence is always the one on lose. Why? Because you're always matched up with the unit that has an advantage on you. Say a stack has a spearman, therefore you cant attack it with a horse unit. You put an axeman against it, but automatically you're faced with a crossbowman. So therefore the only way to beat that unit is to use some amounts of Catapults and utilize the collateral damage. However that means sacrificing lots of catapults.

So... Sacrifice catapults then? >.>

I find that it depends on the promotions that I have. If it's a big stack though, suiciding is probably the best (and most efficient) method, unless you're sure the AI is going to try attacking your stack and you have a strong defensive position. Are you engaging the stack in enemy territory?

Assume the stack is indeed in enemy territory, heck, assume I am seiging a city.

Well in a seige I guess its ok to suicide a few catapults...

if you're seiging, then yeah suicide is probably the easiest solution. If you're in enemy territory and they don't have catapults, I'd try hiding in forests or jungles until you can get reinforcements. If they have catapults... well then...
