How Very Astute of You, Washington

So, I was playing a standard Earth map as Askia and I started in about the area that is present day Sudan. Crushed a lot of barb encampments and got pretty rich, making research pacts with my colleagues on the Eurasian continent (Africa was bare aside from me and some city-states) Long story short, I out-teched the crap out of everyone. Met Elizabeth shortly before Washington crushed her out of Central America and took everything North of Panama for himself. Now, with his vast land and my tech, we're pretty much 1&2 the entire time. Anyway, sitting with two mech infantry and two artillery outside of French-occupied India, I was informed that Napoleon had just teched into the Renaissance Era and decided this was probably enough of a force to liberate India's three cities. (Turns out, it was three more units than I needed). Just as I am welcoming Ghandi back into the game, Washington tells me he can't overlook my war-mongering. Now, I can accept this. I started an unprovoked war, after all. But there's a problem: Who told Washington I started a war with Napoleon? I was looking for allies beforehand and, when I went to Washington, I learned that he had no contact with anyone other than me (having crushed everyone whose territory he ever saw under his ever expanding boot, city states included).

TLDR Version: The AI knows that I declated war even though they don't know the person I'm at war with... Or anyone other than me, for that matter... WTH?!?!?

Yeah, the AI knows if you go to war with someone they don't know and the AI knows if you settle near their borders even if they can't see the city. The AI is also very stupid, so these minor things help without dramatically cheating for them.

Even more annoying is when 4 civs declare war on you out of the blue before Classical, you manage to build an army from scratch, eventually conquer each of their single-city civs, and have your friends cancel their pacts of cooperation because of your "warmongering".

Riiiiighhhht.

Haven't been called a warmonger while defending myself since Civ I. Nice downgrade, guys.

Funny story. I was playing as Japan. The Siam guy settles right on my border. Rome asks me to go to war against Siam. I say ok take out his city. Rome takes out 2 and then I take Siam's capital. As soon as the capital falls Rome calls me a warmonger. A few turns later 3 civs declare war on me!

Or when they're the ones who push you into the war... Freakin schizophrenic AI.

I find the AI cheating to be at extreme levels in ciV. It's as bad as Civ III. :(

I am constantly noticing that when I sail halfway across the world and meet a city state, invariably one of my neighbours from the old world declares that they are protecting the city state I just met. Now, I am reasonably sure that they haven't made contact with this city state before so I hate that they get to meet this city state just because I did.

Sounds like a good excuse to take out a Civ (yours) weakened by war, if you ask me. I'd do the same thing in the AI's tiny technical shoes.

Lol, perhaps the Ai is lulling everyone into a sense of security and playing dumb

until the day it does a surprise attack and captures everyones cities in every game playing

I knew steam was a bad idea...

Even so I wish "I" could talk nasty with other civs about a AI warmongers
Or explain i needed to declare war cuz he settled near my capital, protecting a CS etc.

Somewhat relevant, about being called warmonger for wrong reasons.

I played Russia on Continents. Had a nice yard to expand into, then I bumped into several civilizations — happened that it was really huge continent, with almost Pangeaish feeling to it. Anyway, was peaceful with everyone, and neglected military just a bit. Meanwhile, Suleiman conquered Napoleon and become my neighbor. Then he (and Bismark, who was on another side of continent, but I never saw him in this war until later, not important anyway) declared on me simultaneously.

Okay, then, no big deal. Rushbuy of some pretty advanced medieval units — been nicely expanded Russia, I had no problems with Longswordsmen, Crossbowmen and Knights army (no Trebs yet, and didn't built any Catapults for unknown reason, yet again this is irrelevant). So, I defended from Turkish onslaught in forests near border, and then counterattacked with all force. I took Orleans and, well, decided to burn it to the ground. Then I took Paris and decided that I really don't want it right now.

So, naturally, I liberated it back to previously-conquered Napoleon. In my firm opinion, in any plausible case France and Napoleon personally should be eternally grateful for such a feat, loving Russia and proclaiming us as noble and just liberators worldwide. That just makes sense. But... He called me a warmonger, was really not amused to see me and had "hostile" tag attached in diplomacy screen.

I didn't liked that. Not one bit. It kills any incentive to "roleplay nice". For me from now on, it's either detached diplomatic neutrality with some trades and possibly even gifts if I'm going to be isolated and peaceful, or total war Atilla-style, with lies, exploiting and backstabbing. There is no middle ground.

Zomgmeister, your story went nicely with your signature. :) And that's pretty much how I play anyway; if I'm going for a domination win I'll lie, cheat and steal my way there, much more so than if I desperately need the research agreements of other Civs for an early Space win.

I just love it when I finally take out that ass that was angering everyone and threatening to start pretty much world war, then every AI civ immediatly calls me a warmonger and cancels everything ever.

It makes me feel better when I eventually backstab them and eat them.

Or when the AI have conquered practically an entire continent, you go and attack one city state or something (that they arent friendly with in any way) and they turn round and call YOU a warmonger! Look Wasington, I have to conquer something because youre totally running away with the game here! :)
