I'm sorry if this sounds completely stupid...but how do you run this game? I've tried opening the shortcut found in the Fall from heaven 2 021 folder, but all that happens is I get a brief popup of the Civ 4 pre-game loading screen, followed by nothing. If I'm clicking on the wrong thing, could someone point me in the right direction?

And if not...and I'm clicking the right thing, is this a common problem?

If the shortcut doesnt work for you try loading civ4 (not warlords) then go into advanced options, load a mod and select Fall from Heaven from the list.

Mmm...no that's not working either. Leads to the same problem. I've yet to download any patches to my own copy of Civilization 4, could this be the problem?

Yeap, you need Civ4 patch 1.61 to play.

I've recruited a lot of players on game spy for ffh2. A lot of them make these same mistakes. Maybe you are as well and that's why you are having problems loading game if its not cause you simply didn't have civ4 up to date with 1.67 patch and weren't trying to play it on warlord's cd as kael mentioned.

If your still having problems after making sure u did kael's checks of 1.67 patch for civ and using civ4 vanilla cd, NOT warlords cd, than maybe its this:

lots of poeple who tried to install this have some times not installed BOTH the actual game exe file (287 mbs)(version .021 currently) and its current patch (F)(2 mbs). You install the big file first THAN the patch. Both big exe file and patch should auotmatically install to the right place, if not cuz u changed civ4 location around or why-ever than u need to manually install BOTH files into your MODS folder in civ4 folder. do NOT install patch into the ffh2 folder in MODS folder. U install it to the MODS folder and it will add its changes to the mod.

You can check if you've you done it right by opening up the ffh2 folder and opening its read me file. In the upper left corner of read me file it will tell what version and patch you have properly installed of ffh2 mod.

The other mistake many poeple do is:

Install the files while running civ4. civ4 WON'T recognize your installation if you do. So, you either just have to restart civ4 to see ffh2 on load mod list under advanced under options on civ4 main screen, or you got to re-Install the files, this time with civ4 closed n not running, than start up civ4 and ffh2 mod should be there now on load mod list.

note for completion: you need Civ4 1.61 patch (not 1.67).
