UPDATE 1 – SPRING 2006
As wheels turn so does time and as spring dawns upon Europe it also dawns upon a new age, an age of mistrust, threats and unchecked aggression. The old order has collapsed and it is now every nation for itself. The world holds its breath waiting to see who will make the first strike. Will the industrial powerhouses use their strength to dominate and alter the map for their own benefits or will some minor nation take the world by surprise and grow to dominance? Only time will tell what happens, but everybody knows that it is going to be bloody. The first strikes has already been struck, mainly in areas where people are used to unrest, but also in places where it was much less expected.
In Russia things are still quiet though. The massive country has incredibly long borders to defend, but rest somewhat secure in their status as a major power. Confident in the strength of their troops the Russians take no military action apart from shuffling their troops about a bit. Instead the Russians display a frenzy of building activity as they modernize many old factories from the second world war and construct new facilities. As manufacturing plants finish it is going to make Russia much more frightening. Already their neighbors are casting anxious glances toward Moscow fearing the worst.

Moving across Europe to a traditional Russian enemy then Germans don’t just lay about either. They too start on a massive building program to strengthen their economy even more. All across the nation manufacturies are upgraded to use the latest robotics for more efficient production. Not only that, but several more plants are constructed further increasing the lead the Germans have making it by far the strongest and most dangerous nation in Europe. Clearly they are preparing for a Fourth Reich to dominate the continent once again, but will they have any better luck than last time?
+1 PP in all provinces except Rhineland-Palatinate
Several minor nations also build more industry, but attention is invariably diverted away from these small nations as Italy launch an invasion of neighboring Slovenia. Sending in bombers first to deal with the enemy mountaineer units the infantry follows after quickly. In a display of amazing luck or, perhaps, skill the Italian bombers inflict massive damage on the mountaineers effectively taking them out of the action. Italy’s own mountaintroops pour into the nation in the northwest, battletanks break through the border in the center and the coastal town of Izola is in the midst of a naval invasion by marines. As the dust clears Italy is in firm control of Slovenia having suffered only minor damage. The biggest surprise for the Italians are a skirmish with Croatian troops who seemed to have designs on the nation themselves, but are left with nothing after the Italian blitzkrieg. As a result of the rapid attack the Slovenian industry escapes virtually unscathed and with only minor damage. As reinforcements roll off the assembly lines and more units are trained, the Italian army ends up being much stronger than it started out.
-1 Italian infantry, -1 Italian mountaineer, -Slovenia
Compared to the strikes of the Italian army things are quite a bit more quiet in Spain. Like their German and Russian counterparts the Spanish concentrate on increasing their industrial output. There’s some dissent over where to place the new industry, but eventually a compromise is reached and new plants are built moderately spread out over all of Spain.
Valencia, Leon, Cordoba, Navarre, Toledo +1 PP
Italy and Croatia are not the only ones though who decide that it is better to strike fast and hard instead of letting their enemies build up strength. In Northern Africa things are a mess. The Libyan army pours into Tunesia and engages the Tunesian forces in the south of the nation. Against odds the Libyans win and capture a heavily damaged province as the Tunesians pull back from the onslaught
-3 Tunesia infantry, -1 Libya infantry, southern Tunesia to Libya.
At the same time this is happening the Egyptian army attacks Libya. Facing only minor resistance they easily take Cyrenaica and a part of the desert. Greece also stirs, determined to put an end to the Republic of Macedonia and launching a massive invasion while looking worried to Turkey in the east. Despite resisting heavily they can’t resist the Greek army and yet another nation is wiped from the map.
Cyrenaica and East Libyan Sahara to Egypt; -2 Greek infantry, -Macedonia
Western Europe also sees warfare when the Belgium army invades tiny Luxembourg. Overconfident the Belgians attack the capital city only to find it more fortified and the defenders much more motivated than expected. In a series of battles the Belgians get mauled by the Luxembourg forces and are forced to retreat in disarray. The shock and humiliation increases unrest in Belgium, but in Luxembourg they celebrate.
-5 Belgium infantry, -3 Luxembourg infantry, +unrest in Belgium
Another battleground is spotted in Scandinavia when Norway shockingly attack their bigger neighbor Sweden. Even more shocking is the fact that the Norwegians completely roll over the Swedish army capturing several provinces before the Swedes pull back to organize better defenses. Not only that, but the speed of the advance means many production facilities are captured intact.
-3 Norway infantry, -4 Sweden infantry, Vestergotland, Swedish Lapland and Jamtland to Norway
Finally two nations seeks too regain old lands as England invades Ireland and the Poles attack Lithuania. The poor Irish stand no chance against the English attack and are quickly pushed back and close to completely destroyed. In the east the Poles have their problems with the Lithuanian battle, but manages to do some progress while devastating their enemy. Lithuania and Ireland still survive, but it is doubtful that they will hang on for much longer.
-3 Poland infantry, -4 Lithuania infantry, Eastern Lithuania to Poland; -4 Ireland infantry, -2 England infantry, Leinster and Connacht to England
Those PC nations who didn’t give orders have had their PP banked for spending next turn. I won’t be this generous in the future.
