Humankind Game by Amplitude

for mysterious reasons, I expect Italy in contemporary :mischief:

Me too. Probably because we need SOME European culture, and Italy was united only in 1860s anyway (like Germany) but unlike Germany it didn't really become powerhouse until Cold War. In the 1980s Italy was fourth biggest economy in the world. Tbh I have hoped for Germany being peaceful European civ in the modern era, but "let's simulate world wars" approach has won, putting them all in the industrial :p

What other European cultures could happen in the modern era? Sweden or Finland are not the worst joice, they'd personify Nordic quality of human rights. I'd be really fine with Czechoslovakia, to be honest. Other possibilities are Switzerland and Belgium.

Finland, Czechoslavakia and Yugoslavia are ideas which come really often on discord in our discussions about modern era. We don't know how much it's doable, but seems really interesting ideas.
Finland is an interesting pick, but not especially for the "Nordic quality of human rights" things imho (it's more a "today" image of Scandivanian countries, mostly Sweden).
But Finland is interesting anyway for multilple other reasons.

I don't expect other european countries for the launch to be honest, almost all the big european superpowers have been covered. Two big european audiences are missing : Italy and Sweden, and they are maybe waiting to be revealed for industrial or modern era. Portuguese will probably be an Early Modern DLC.
Later we can expect a baltic, slavic or balkanic nation as DLC for modern, maybe ?

And there is so much important entities to get in Modern era : China, Soviets, India, one country of the Arabian Peninsula, at least one important african country (Kenya, Nigeria, Botswana, South-Africa, ...) or two, America, Australia, ... and there is a lot of potential for singular pick which never appeared in Civ.

As a Belgian : seriously modern Belgium is so boring, I don't expect them, really :p
Industrial era could work really well for the "industrial superpower", extreme coal mining, the trainophilia and rich architectures of this period ... But even if the industrial infrastructures continued to be used at the start of the "humankind modern era", but quickly outdated and closed a little later, and we continued to build some cool trains.(yeah it's important, railway infrastructures was ridiculously ultra dense and much too develloped for a so small country, before being dismantled and abandonned for a great part) > Still, I don't expect modern Belgian, really.

For Switzerland I don't know... their "neutral" position is a little wacky for the 4X genre ... but could be interesting : a sort of ultra defensive gameplay for a player which don't want to expand anymore and just being ultra mercantile.
But Swiss mercenaries are so important in early modern era than I cross my finger to have them as an EM mercenary corps.
Imagine : trencend Romans, become catholic and recruit Swiss Guard to make a "Papal States" run.

Odd... we're supposed to have a culture reveal by now

It seems weird for a European company, but maybe they delayed it till later this week for Columbus/Indigenous Peoples Day.

Unless you're a Spanish company (Spain's national day falls on October 12 for the same reasons), I don't think any European company would bother.

I assume Soviet Union will come up in Contemporary, since the "culture" in Humankind works as a "trait" you can adopt when entering a new Era; a "Soviet culture" can also cover all the Eastern Bloc regimes/themes (unless the "Communism" ideology works in this way as well).

Switzerland is best kept as a minor culture - and I say that as a Swiss. Though, having said that, there would be quite an argument for Industrial or Modern over the Early Modern or Medieval version. Switzerland grows as a military player until 1515 when we lost the city of Milan to the French. Afterwards, there's reformation and exporting cheese to Germany in the 30-years-war, but really it's the industrial revolution (first Napoleonic Blockade, then Neutrality) that makes Switzerlandt the rich country we are today.

Off the tangent, Soviets can be a culture while at the same time there being a communist ideology. It's about alternate history after all.

The way I see it now is gameplay related. As Industrial and Modern are the last two eras, you probably will transcend a lot from the industrial if you are in the lead. That makes for quite a logical separation into a group one (European nation states) and a group two (post-colonial nations of the world). Though, that reasoning would really mean we will get a tsarist russia and then no soviets later on. Though they can be the exception :)

My boi now has someone to scream for

There hasn't been any new Humankind content lately besides the culture reveals, so I made a meme template of the image above for you guys. I don't know if the link is public or not.

BTW, Google smashed their piggybank and will be providing 7 days of Humankind Beta (we think it's OpenDev, but it remains to be seen... TBH at the very least I'd love if they added the updated attack animations as those left a lot to be desired back then) on Stadia starting today.

So if any folks here couldn't get in during the three testing weeks, now's your chance. :)
Though keep in mind it's Stadia, so if you're not one of the select ones, you'll need a VPN to get in on the fun.

I find it quite odd that Amplitude didn't promote this on any of their social media channels. And I don't know how this demo for Stadia would differ from the OpenDev.

I better try this out and try to post anything we haven't seen so far.

UPDATE:
I'm also quite curious about this reddit comment:

The Stadia build is a DIFFERENT OpenDev scenario, where you play as Nubia in the Ancient Era and advance into the Classical Era, picking a new culture. I'm excited to try it out!

And because this is a demo, it is completely free. Just use your normal Google account as your Stadia account and you're good to go.

Sadly Stadia is not available in my country... hopefully this Nubia OpenDev is later made available for other platforms
