"After coming into power, the Qajar Dynasty chose Tehran as their new capital, creating modern infrastructure and many luxurious buildings, such as the Golestan Palace.
Will you play as the Persians in the Industrial Era?"

I mentioned this in other thread, but I'd like to expand on it. I absolutely love that Humankind explores many facets of different cultures without any restriction like in civ, where so often cultures just get brushed aside because "we already have X" "It's to close to Y" "no suitable leader/language" "weren't important enough compared to Z"

In this case, Persia gets Achaemenid and Qajar, and that makes me so happy, and hopeful to see later, for example, a Sassanid culture on DLC to bash heads against Byzantium.

Same decent treatment for Mesoamerican, Italian and Indian cultures, love it..

Also I agree with Lauris on the livestream, the art is absolutely gorgeus and complex, I so want to buy the artbook for Humankind.

The Persians 2.0 huh? Interesting... I probably would have called them the Qajars.

So I'm guessing the classical era Persians will be renamed the Achaemenids?

Absolutely in love with that artwork though!

I'm quite disappointed by having "Persians" for the culture name instead of "Qajars", since people most often associate "Persians" with the Classical era ones rather than the Industrial ones. I hope they change the name lest people confuse it with Achaemenid Persia.

Despite this though, it's great that they get to represent an era in Iranian history often neglected in 4X games. Great job for this!

As I understand it, Achaemenids have much more name recognition than the Qajars, so it makes sense to name the latter Persians. I wonder why they didn't go with Iran or Eran though, which is just as appropriate for all iterations of Persia/Iran.

Non-classical Persia was long overdue, so I'm very happy to see it included.

The artwork is stunning, I understand why it's the favorite one of the Amplitude artist we met on the stream.

I'm really happy to see they are not Merchant, it was one of my fears, because it is fairly easy to find informations on economy of the country under Zand and Qajar dynasty : the post-safavid economy was bad and the trade routes were no more safe.
I expected Aesthete, but Builder is really cool too.

The Caravanserai was identified in the openDev outro, I just hope it's not only about money. Like I explained, pilgrims, travelers and foreigners took refuge in the Caravaneserai. It's a place that was bubbling with the exchange of goods and ideas.

The whole design is good, giving Qajar vibes and quotes, Qajar dynasty which are interesting and cover almost all the industrial era of the game, Afsharid army unit (reference to Nadîr Châh campaigns ?) and an architecture which refer to the whole history of Persia / Iran.
It's a really solid design, and I really want to play them.

BUT the naming. I suppose than Classical Persians will be renamed ?
I don't really like it. Persians to Iranians was so clean, trenscending Iranians to Modern era too.
I don't believe we will have trenscended Persians fighting industrial Persians.
About Persians or Iranians, Both naming are legit, none of them is a slur.

One of the meanings of Persians, is about the specific ethny which live in Iran.
BUT, the twitter speak about the Qajar : a multi-ethnic Persia, a turkic dynasty, and the Qajars used the title Šāh-e Irān (basically king of Iran).
Various persian empires including the Qajars called themselves Iran. Iran name is relevant since third century.

And I don't expect modern Iran to be added one day in the game, for audience reason ?
Maybe the Safavid Persians ? To follow Achaemenid Persians ?

So I would really like to know why^^

Edit : Little supposition, but maybe than Iranians was never expected because, when Iran was adopted officially as name of the modern country, it was to make it more distinct of the neighbours (of today, Afghanistan for exemple). When under Qajar, it was more mixed. Modern meaning of Iranian is maybe less inclusive for the cultures which take part in Persia/Iran History ?

I would have personally named them Iranians. However I think they might just rename the classical culture to Achaemenid Persia.

And I really wonder how will look like the Persians Units. :mischief: In openDev outro, and recent screenshots they seems to have the typical long hats of Qajar army. (looks like for me)
But the Emblematic Unit artwork has an Afsharid army uniform.
Spoiler :

I'm very happy to see Islamic Persia FINALLY in some sort of 4X game, after 30 years of 100% Achaemenid domination (I have also always thought that Islamic Persia is much more interesting and contains like 90% of greatness of the Iranian civilization). Islamic Persia and Italy are the most significant missing peoples of Sid Meier's series. I would prefer Safavids but oh well, maybe we'll see them in the future.

It's weird how I have never thought of them getting the Builder affinity until very late, Persian architecture has an insane influence over area from Morocco to Bangladesh and Qajars were proficient builders.

I would have personally named them Iranians. However I think they might just rename the classical culture to Achaemenid Persia.

Ironically, modern Iranians in the West often prefer term "Persians" because it has mostly positive connotations in the Western culture, while the term "Iran" makes people think of modern regime :p

The artwork is great! Although with the woman serving tea in the front, I couldn't help but think...

To address the elephant in the room (as opposed to those besieging Oxenforde): Yes, we are most likely renaming the Classical Era culture to Achaemenid Persians.

Yes, the Caravanserai does have effects other than Monday generation, but I'm not sure I'd get away with talking about them yet.

So will you add "Qajar" in front of Persians for Industrial or will these guys just be "Persians?" Either way, very stoked to play them!

I think this means it gets a production bonus. The quarter auto-converts all Fridays to Mondays, skipping weekends.

Considering that the Industrial Revolution basically invented the work week, this needs to be a thing in the game :crazyeye:

I'm assuming they will just be called Persians, thought I'm not for certain. I think modern Japan might just be called the Japanese too.

I think modern Japan might just be called the Japanese too.

One thing I thought the other day is that, when they said they will have "Chinese, Japanese, and Korean" in Contemporary, it can also mean all the Chinese/Japanese/Korean people in the modern sense instead of a direct reference to PRC, SK, and Japan.

It is just a random thought though.

So Japanese and Korean are definitely confirmed then for the Contemporary? I would have thought that Vietnamese would have been another option instead of the Koreans well because of the current split of Korean people into two countries.

Anyway even with Industrial Persia now what are the chances we see a Contemporary culture called Iranians in the future?
