I am an Idiot, a newbie and am stuck!

Sup fellow idiots !

First, read the tech tree, read units stats, buildings' effects, and try to figure out a nice way to do stuff so that your empire prospers.

Once you start playing constructively and have a good idea what such and such techs/buildings do, you'll want to increase your number of workers and warriors. Workers = power. Mines, irrigations and roads give extra production, food and commerce. Take care for the despotic negative bonus though: a 2-food grassland, irrigated, will only give its extra food after you change for another government, for instance.

Btw, watch out that settlers will decrease your population amount by 2, workers by one, and they cannot pop until your town is size 3 (or 2). Granaries help cities grow back up faster, so you want one in your base towns that will make workers and settlers.

I don't want to put too much in, as there is already a lot of info around; have fun trying it out !!

well, been there, done that. i know the units, the buildings, etc. i just need a few clarifications, really, but i need to interact with my "teacher", i've read plenty of guides, some more than twice (crackers's for example).

The "Deity settlers" guide helped me a lot to prepare for emperor difficulty, as the computers are ahead and the same principles of catching up from behind in tech and power apply. You might wanna try thattoo, although it is true that other guides like this would be awesome.

i don't want to insist, but when i say i have spent 3 days reading guides, i am not exagerating =) that includes the Deity Babs article.

The first step for me is always building a warrior to guard my first city and then switching right away to build settlers so I can build more cities. It's also important to leave enough space between cities so they don't smother each other by encroaching into needed expansion space for each city.

I wouldn't read all of the guides, otherwise you'll never play a game, I just tend to skim through them to get the gist of what they say and pick things up as I play. :D

okay, i might qualify for "idiot" but don't repeat it ^^

anyway, i've been reading stuff for the last 2 or 3 days (most excellent articles here guys, very nice to read them), but the problem comes when i try to actually apply the strategies. i know most of the game mechanisms, at least in part (i know how culture works, i know how to determine the likeliness of a fight, etc etc), but i always have the feeling i cannot get the most of my starting locations. i have never EVER succeeded in setting up a settler/worker factory for example. i cannot seem to be able to correctly micromanage my cities. and so on and so forth.

so, what i'm looking for is either or all of the following:
- yet another guide, very detailed (but i already read most of those here i guess, including cracker's for example).
- some place where i can find a step-by-step savegame with the explanation for every save (i am pretty sure there is here, but i seem to have missed it)
- some nice guy(s) ready to give me some quick personalized advice (via MSN, Y!M, IRC, or plain PM/e-mail)

thanks a lot guys =)

How abou this thread:

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=37821

It was the first quick-start-challenge hosted by cracker. There are other games similar to it in the Quick Start forum, the GOTM forum and the Succession Games Forum.

thanks a lot, i'll start reading it now =)
if you know of any other "savegames" or "replays" or whatever (i am still a newbie, remember ? i don't know how you guys compare strategies =P), please let me know, as i would really like some hard examples instead of only theory =)$

EDIT: for example, i've just laid my hands/eyes on the so-called "HandyAndy game" thread, and it looks VERY promising =)
btw, for other 'idiots' (=P) interested, here's the HandyAndy thread: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36486

lurker's comment: Nice to see fellow 'idiots'. I thought I was the only one. Start small and work your way up. That is, play on regent, with a standard map and no barbs. use 4 AI and lots of land. This should give you time to expand without the AI making demands and taking you out. With regard to the settler pump. That's something you come to recognize after playing. Not every game will give you a settler pump. You have to learn to recognize when it's viable. On regent the AI is pretty forgiving. Try America. Then when you pop the huts, there's no danger of evil barbs. I'd suggest hitting the quick start challenges on COTM, reading what the players did, trying to duplicate it and see what happens. Once you get reasonably comfortable with regent, sign up for a Monarch SG trainer. Hope this helps. Since I'm an idiot, it's probably as clear as mud.
