I can't trade resources even though I have a trade route with another empire?

I have a trade route with another empire, but when I go to our Diplomatic screen, I cannot trade resources (and technology, too).

What do I have to do to enable these? I can't see ANY resources OR technologies that I can trade, with most of the other empires. Although strangely, I can trade them for certain empires.

Technology trading is only activated when you have researched Alphabet.

As for your trade routes, are you sure that you have trade routes established? Does the little symbol show up next to the leaders names? All that I can think is that you don't have a trade route established, you just think you do.

IIRC, you need Writing which enables Open Border for resources trading.

You can actually trade resources without open borders...does the leader you want to trade with have an arrows symbol next to their name on the list of contacts?

If you don't have any resources AI doesn't have and AI doesn't have any duplicates of resources you don't have, you won't have an option to trade any resources with them.

I don't understand. Right now, I'm playing against the AI, and I can only trade horses with them - although they have access to at least 5 different resources.

How do I make it so that I can trade with all of their resources?

You will only be able to request resources that they have multiples of. If they do have multiples of other resources and you still can't trade with them, then they are trading their resources with other civs.
