I stick with the classics
R/B/Y has the classic feel to it, playing it brings that amazing middle-school nostalgia back. But my abolsute favorite was Silver version. That is probably because I downloaded the Japanese emulator before it was released in the US, and didn't have a translator or a guide to the game. I don't speak Japanese, either. I had to figure everything out by myself. I was a trail blazer as far as I was concerned. I had to figure out what every move was (including those new ones), and what type they were, and what type all these pokemon were, and why Bite could hurt Ghost Pokemon, and why Magnemite was suddenly a fortress. Seriously, very very fun.
But I generally love the whole concept behind Silver version. It just feel cooler, the whole journey. It seems like you're in Japan, sort of. I'm sure you know what I mean. And the whole day/night thing was sweet, as was the times and days of the week.

In Pokemon terms, that means Jigglypuff.
Assuming I have to start with the most basic form of the pokemon (excluding pichu, elekid, etc), Cyndaquil or Torchic would probably be my first choices. If I could take most advanced, I'd take a Ninetails or a Crobat.

Mewtwo. Mainly because my cross county teams assigned him as my PokeMon. (Whenever someone joins Varsity on the team, all the other Varsity players go through all the old pokemon cards they've been saving, until they find one that either looks like, or acts like, the person. The team picked Mewtwo for me because we're both crazy psychos who kill everyone in sight.

No I mean once I caught one in my red version I used him to beat the rest of the game and dumped my starter.

I was going to say Ralts until I remembered that it only starts with Growl. Its kinda useless until it learns a real move.
