I Fail SO Hard on the Ishihara Test

Ever since I joined the Marine Corps, I have known that I am red-green colorblind, however it seems a rather tame form of color blindness to me. Individually, I can see red and green both very clearly, however if you sit them next to each other, after a few seconds of staring at them, they both fade to grey. Yes, I can see that grass is green and that Circuit City's emblem is red. If anyone remembers the older Mountain Dew cans:

I can clearly see that "Mountain" is green and "Dew" is red and the rest of the can is various hues of green. However, if I stare at it for a good 5 seconds, they both fade to grey.

I can also discern between different shades of red & green (ie. forest, olive, sea, grass green / scarlet, pink, brick, cherry red). Browns I'm fine with, but sometimes I initially have a little trouble between green & brown. I can tell the difference between brown, auburn, mahogany, burgundy, etc. and also between various purples.

Traffic Lights I can discern very easily. I can easily tell Red apart from Green. The only difference from what I see and what other people see, is that sometimes I see the green being more like white than green. Up close I can clearly see the green tint, though.

My biggest problem IRL is when trying to discern the color of an object (not a light) waaaaay off in the distance. Then I have trouble figuring out if it's red, green or grey.

Anyways, so I took this test online:

http://colorvisiontesting.com/ishihara.htm

Man, I bombed it hard. I got 1/8 right.

Doing the test on the wiki page:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishihara_color_test

I got 3/4 right (I missed the 2nd from the left)

Aaaaand, on the Ishihara Test here:

http://www.toledo-bend.com/colorblind/Ishihara.html

I got 3/6 right.

This test is much different from the others:

http://www.opticien-lentilles.com/daltonien_beta/new_test_daltonien.php

I got 29/31 right. Going back over the answers and looking very closely, I can see one of the ones I got wrong.

Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone else here is color blind, what their experiences with it are and how they did on the tests. I would also like to know how easy the Ishihara Test is for people with normal vision. It was very difficult, if not borderline impossible, for me to see anything.

It's very easy for a non-colour blind(or at least for me). I only had to look longer to see the second one clearly, but even then I looked max 4 seconds.

In Finland when your health is checked before middle school or on the first grade of middle school, the nurse does you the Ishihara test to check your colour vision. The version she made me do had a trick question too(it was nasty, I was like "Whaaaatt!?" when I saw it :D).

I have seen supposed tests that were actually shockers, so I am always careful.

I assure you, they are not shockers. I'm seriously wondering if it is as hard for normal vision people as it was for me, because I can see red/green and tell a difference between the two of them.

I didn't make any mistake in any of the tests.

I didn't have any trouble on the 8-question one. Haven't tried the others.

I did well on all of them, there was only one question, the last one on the 3rd test listed that I answered wrong, but I could see the correct one, although it was harder. I don't know what that means. Some of them may take a little longer to get, but in the end I see the correct number.

The 8 question one was very easy, I had to do i once before too and when my friend went before me he found out he was color blind, didn't even know it before.

You gotta be kidding, I only saw the demonstration plate... Even from the easier ones.
I never realized how color blind I am. Guess is not a big problem.

I passed all my Ishihara tests. However, I am tempted for 42 to answer "Answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything". But I am not sure if the eye doctor would get the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy reference ;).

I got 0/8, but I almost got the two where colourblind people might see something.

I figure transgenic therapies will be available in the next 10-12 years, though. That's if our red/green opponency neurones are developed, just not utilized.

How the hell did they let you in the Marines colorblind like that? Or did they just miss it?

I would've been booted at MEPS if they found out I was color blind (I'm not).

But I mean, you guys are the few the proud and what not, what is your MOS or job duty or whatever you jarheads call it? I hope it's not combat arms, not that there is a lot of green and red combined together in Iraq/Afghani

I'm normal-sighted (with regards to color; I'm terribly nearsighted) and the Ishihara test was pretty easy. You should see the answer immediately in these sorts of things, in my opinion.
