Ever since I joined the Marine Corps, I have known that I am red-green colorblind, however it seems a rather tame form of color blindness to me. Individually, I can see red and green both very clearly, however if you sit them next to each other, after a few seconds of staring at them, they both fade to grey. Yes, I can see that grass is green and that Circuit City's emblem is red. If anyone remembers the older Mountain Dew cans:
I can clearly see that "Mountain" is green and "Dew" is red and the rest of the can is various hues of green. However, if I stare at it for a good 5 seconds, they both fade to grey.
I can also discern between different shades of red & green (ie. forest, olive, sea, grass green / scarlet, pink, brick, cherry red). Browns I'm fine with, but sometimes I initially have a little trouble between green & brown. I can tell the difference between brown, auburn, mahogany, burgundy, etc. and also between various purples.
Traffic Lights I can discern very easily. I can easily tell Red apart from Green. The only difference from what I see and what other people see, is that sometimes I see the green being more like white than green. Up close I can clearly see the green tint, though.
My biggest problem IRL is when trying to discern the color of an object (not a light) waaaaay off in the distance. Then I have trouble figuring out if it's red, green or grey.
Anyways, so I took this test online:
http://colorvisiontesting.com/ishihara.htm
Man, I bombed it hard. I got 1/8 right.
Doing the test on the wiki page:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ishihara_color_test
I got 3/4 right (I missed the 2nd from the left)
Aaaaand, on the Ishihara Test here:
http://www.toledo-bend.com/colorblind/Ishihara.html
I got 3/6 right.
This test is much different from the others:
http://www.opticien-lentilles.com/daltonien_beta/new_test_daltonien.php
I got 29/31 right. Going back over the answers and looking very closely, I can see one of the ones I got wrong.
Anyways, I'm wondering if anyone else here is color blind, what their experiences with it are and how they did on the tests. I would also like to know how easy the Ishihara Test is for people with normal vision. It was very difficult, if not borderline impossible, for me to see anything.
