I get an XML error about burial traditions when loading up the mod

The error is because you did not delete the files that should have been deleted. Updates don't only add and update files sometimes they delete unused ones as well.

Would be easier to do a clean install in my opinion. Since save files are stored in Documents you don't need to worry about erasing them.

Copy somewhere user settings and delete Caveman2Cosmos folder.
If you are updating from V38.1 then saves are toast, as save compatibility was broken due to serious bugs in AI.
