So I'm Shaka and I'm playing fractal maps immortal difficulty. My neighbors are Babylon India and Siam. I declare war on Babylon as he's marching his settler and warrior towards the far side of my kingdom. My impi and comp bows kill him and gain a worker. I advance on his borders with an army of 6...he gives me his size 12 city as a peace offering. I take it and suffer -19 happiness for a few turns while I connect and build. About 20 turns later Gandhi asks me to war with Babylon...I ask for 10 turns to prepare. I end up attacking his capital in about 7 turns however as I see ghandi is poised to take it over despite heavy casualties. I cap his capital and take him out of the game.

Neither Gandhi nor ram have ANY bad feelings about me. They don't mention warmongering and they don't covet my lands. I'm firmly in the lead now with universities in my four home cities and about to plant two more cities on more resources via backfill.

Was warmonger penalty patched? Or do they fear the mighty Shaka??? They are both friendly with me btw.

Civilizations who are your friends will generally ignore your warmongering. You'll notice, however, if they ever stop being friendly towards you that you'll get the warmongering penalty with them.

Exactly what Talcove says. It's only a matter of time before they turn on you and when that happens your warmongering is still fresh on their minds, rest assured.

There is only one solution... Dead people can't be unhappy, can they? ;) :mwaha:

It often simply takes time for AIs to realize what you've done. It might have to do with the ending of friend declarations... I didn't check it. But oftentimes after 5-15 turns they suddenly change their minds about your actions (in my experience). After that I make sure they sleep all their nights well without worries (in the cold ground, that is).

The genocide penalty in Ancient and Classical times should be removed or greatly lessened imo. War is war, business is business and their land was our ancestral promised land anyways... They were simply unfortunate intruders, now resting peacefully. My people believe it; why would their god, err, king lie to them? :king::mischief:

Oh that's disappointing. I thought maybe this improvement had been made. Well then. They are of a heathen faith and only live in my unclaimed lands by my sufferance. Perhaps it is time to annex their lands in tribute, lest they grow discontent...

I recently played a game as Brazil and Indonesia was my runaway Wonder-spamming neighbor. I conspired to take them out. I was friendly with a lot of the other civs, but not all. It was my first war of the game. I took out all but one Indonesian city, including the capital, and I freed a city-state they had taken.

Between Indonesia being disliked, my friendliness, it being my first war, and the liberation of a city-state I managed to come away with zero negative diplomatic points.

I don't believe that acquiring a city via a peace deal counts towards the warmonger penalty.

The warmonger penalty is all about number of cities captures vs number of cities in the whole game. So since you only took 1 city and it's not uber early in the game, you're unlikely to have a penalty.

If you and another civilization are fighting another civ, your ally will not get mad, no matter how many cities you take, as long as your ally is still at war.

What the above posts said, that's why it's nice to have a buddy to help you take over the world.

But also I have a question: does razing a city give a greater warmongering penalty? What if you raze a city in a trade deal?
