I consider myself a decent player. I can beat most people i know personally but there are a few that beat me usually. Now i go to yahoo chess and out of over 100 games i've won once.

Thats so lame. Every jerk on there is a freeking shark that plays in the begginners section even though they are not begginners. Im so sick of that crap.

So im posting because i want a site to go to where the odds are more even and not so stupid.

That's nothing. Try out the Free Internet Chess Server (FICS). Very simple interface, quite fast and good opponents.

I hate yahoo chess too... but I guess it was because I didn't know how the timers worked... I lost a few times because of the timer...

Why don´t you only play people with a rate similar to you? I´m not very good at chess but have not problems in yahoo. My rate in yahoo is around 1500 and I win as many games as I lose.

I haven't played chess in a while, but I found Yahoo! chess too easy.

I usually won, and usually played someone who was terribly impatient. I can't tell you how many times I took my opponent's queen in the early game.

I found playing with the ChessMaster series of PC games much more fun, the opponents I met through this game were a much higher caliber of player.

I hate yahoo chess because of the dumb scripts playing there.....

I play now on playchess.org. They permanently control the games and have tools installed to prevent cheating.

Furthermore Seirawan comments the top tourneys like Linares, Wijk aan Zee and so on. (Even guests can watch his videos for free.)

It is roundabout one month for free but then you can continue as guest (without rating) which I currently do.

My experience with Yahoo chess was thus

1) impatient opponents
2) idiotic opponents
3) easy kills in 7 moves often

I'd recommend the ChessMaster series, period.

^^^woops, I forgot I posted basically the same thing earlier, oh well

I was decent on Yahoo!, before polishing up at Queen Alice. :king: I went back, last weekend, to show off my new skill . . . only to get totally owned by players with ratings only comparable to (or a little lower than) my own. (I.e., I should have done a better job, holding my own.)
It's certainly a different style of play, with more time pressure.

Losing is lame - or depressing, at least. Certainly, many experienced players haunt the beginner fora for easy kills. They can be easily spotted and avoided, if you wish. Alternatively, the don't really do themselves any favors, practicing against players that make obvious tactical mistakes. Thus, these predators may quickly become your prey, if you develop a solid foundation of chess basics. It's very satisfying to set one of them back on his heels. :D

Why curse the dark, when you can light a candle? Any site that posts the ratings of players allows you to pick and choose your opponents that way. Sounds like you had a bad experience with a very long losing streak. Perhaps your skills are not as good as you may want to think (so polish up!), or perhaps you are consistently playing some very good players, in which case, these losses should be turned into good learning opportunities. Try our "Share Your Games!" thread. I have found it invaluable. :goodjob:

The chessmaster is quite good, and definately harder to beat than your average yahoo chess player.
But if you own chessmaster 9000 do not try to play a full tournament; for some reason the AI collapses and plays randomly.
One thing i have noticed playing in yahoo chess is that the opponents seem to be way too anxious to play a move as fast as they can, but since i am always playing for 15min with 10sec advantage, time is too abundant anyway. Obviously it is not material if you have 5+ more minutes of time than your opponent, if he starts taking out important pieces, and that is the norm sometimes in yahoo chess.

I'm something like 2-3 on Yahoo chess. My problem is I don't have the patience to stare at a computer screen and think about chess moves. I like to have a physical, 3-D board to look at, and actual people in the room to play against. When I'm playing real people I'm pretty good relative to my comrades (not sure how I'd fare in organized tournaments).

If I am playing chess on a computer, I like Chessmaster. I only have Chessmaster 4000, but it's still much preferable to Yahoo for me.

I just started playing chess last week and I have played all my games so far on yahoo chess.

Personally, I really enjoy the interface.

But I agree with the OP in that there are WAY too many sharks there. The beginner's rooms are FILLED with players that have played THOUSANDS of games. So dumb. What a bunch of wimps.

Other than that, no complaints.

instantchess.com....i swear by it
