I have an... interesting problem...

Well, let's see... I installed DirectX off of the disc. Then I installed the game onto my hard disk, no problems there... Then I restart the computer, still good. Double-click on the icon, game boots up, so I think "Sweet Deal, I'm set!" I start up a new game, and decide to have my Civ leader be good old Theodore Roosevelt... Until I realize all I can see of the guy are his eyeballs and his set of teeth... Any ideas?

You have some kind of graphics card issue. either your card does not support T&L, or it does but somethings messed up with the drivers. There are some threads in this forum that discuss this in more detail (your leaderhead problem often co-occurs with all-black terrain features and only showing bread and not the hammers and coins for terrain resources).
