I liked Vanilla Civ ... then I discovered "mods" using the familiar interface.

For years I played Civ, and thought mods distracted from the original familiar style of play. If the designers wanted a feature they put it in the actual game. Mods were seen by me at least as an another burden on a very slick game.

However, after playing a few mods that came with the various expansions in the Civ series, I came the realise that "mods" in many cases enhanced the game and "mod" designers have usually given a lot of thought to the reasoning behind their choices. After playing the latest Civ 4 series mods "RtW", "Next War", "Final Frontier" in recent years, a whole new world opened to me. I in effect got multiple games for the price of one, albeit with the same interface.

Now as a "budding" modder myself, I can now also make my own style of game. People have asked me, if I want to play WWII as realistically as possible, why I don't play HoI, etc. I tell them that I like the Civ, need I say it, familiar interface that has really been refined over each successive generation of Civ.

Civ 5, I hope will continue with the familiar interface we have all being accustomed to, albeit enhanced again.

I'm confused on why you started a thread over this, what do you want us to say? (Besides good job :))

*high five*

TBH: I am hi-fiving all the "modders" of games and game designers who make it easy for modders. And Civ 5 look likely to continue that.

Oh give the guy a break, this thread is more intelligent than 90% of the other one's posted around here, of which a large number are "Why dun dey not put my contry in civ5?!?!?!?!?!?!".

umm not to be trollin or a grammer nazi but you don't need an apostrophe after "other ones". just sayin

Sorry. @Abraxis: Unfortunatley, you are SO RIGHT "this thread is more intelligent than 90% of the other one's posted around here, of which a large number are "Why dun dey not put my contry in civ5?!?!?!?!?!?!". "

not sure why its in Civ5, but I just wanted to agree with the OP. I only recently started playing mods. I'm still only playing one, but it's a megamod (ROM). I do want to play some of these others, but I fear I won't ever get around to it. Just not enough time to play Civ4. Sigh...

The reason why I didn't want to play mods originally was I figured if it was a good feature, the designers would have put it in the game in the first place. But I've come to discover they don't want to clutter up the game too much to discourage more casual gamers. But that's why you see such extreme jumps in technology/military units with little bridge in between. Mods help correct this.

Doesn't really pertain to civ5 other than to say, I hope the game is as moddable if not more moddable than civ4. Long live the modding community.

@Disgustipated: i think that civ 5 will not have a "oustanding" list of techs, features etc, I think it will provide a new "base" for mods to start off, for example the hex squares etc. I'm also hoping that Civ 5 doesn't regulate the mods for it, that would make me mad haha
