Does anyone know of a free downloadable program that can edit DDS. If so, where can a get it(a link or adress would be nice):mischief:.

Gimp!

gimp.org.

Download the appropriate version, then find the .dds plugin in the "Plugin Registry"

Paint.net also works nicely - bit simpler interface than the Gimp and only marginally less powerful if you spend a while looking for the plugins.

Anyone wanna recommend a program for... I dont know quite how to word it, but "getting the textures onto 3d models"?

skinning?

what 3d models are you thinking about? are you makingthem from scratch in 3DSMax, or Blender? or are you just viewing them in nifscope of nifviewer?

The easyest way to reskin a 3D model is to find the file that has the .nif you want to edit and save the .dds file as a jpg and edit that, turn it back into a .dds and apply it to the .nif in nifscope or nifviewer.

I have a question on that method, say i have a model and the dds files that i want to edit.

I convert the dds to a format i can edit, and re work it, convert it back to a dds and jobs done. But what if i want to put that skin onto a different model?, i export the texture template and edit that, but how do i connet a new niff to this changed skin?. Is the only way to edit that texture by moving all associated points, on the newly created exported file?.

basicly how does a nif get connected to its dds files, ie if i start with a nif i like and re skin it, but want the same skins to be appiled to other nifs, how do i connect them other than exporting and a long time to transfer this new skin to other nifs so as to make a civs appearence conform to the new uniforms. Is there an easier method?.

Depends what files you want to change, texture files for instance ( ones used in the medieval total war series)you can use the Total war download by Alpaaca from their dowloads, that converts texture files to dds, thus any game that has texture files becomes editable for you.

Heres one for you

And anotherMS3D to OBJ, 3DS and vice virsa converter

Plenty of choice, if your using milkshape etc.

Filefront has any number of dds converters, and/or BIG file converter, which allows the BFME textures to be opened up for editting, or you can simply use mods for BFME to get what others have already converted.

well thats hard because different models will have very different texture layouts. if you look at how the texture is set out for, say the vanilla palace building, and compare that to the texture for wall street you'll see that the images dont overlap. when you look at a texture it is showing you the 3D immage in an 'unwrapped' form, think of it like a paper cube that has been opened out and flattened.

when you retexture something your effectivly changing the pattern on one side of the cube for every section of texture you change. the nifscope isnt able to recognise a units face and place it on the units face it will only take the face if you put it in the right spot for that texture.

now, if you want to use the same skin on a different model, for instance you have a nice face that you want on another unit, you will have to cut the face out of the texture you like, and move it into the position of the other models texture layout making sure it overlaps properly so the nif viewer can make the textures match up. there is no easy way that i can think of unfortunately, it is a long process :( though im not the most experienced with texturing, you might want someone elses opinion, im sure someone else can explain it better than me too.

Yep, over 200 models later all i can come up with is a template for face and helmets to use per faction, which when the helmets animated makes it all rather hard work, still its retty much done now.
