I know building one is the cheapest method. But I have no knowledge of computers outside of gaming, word, or internet. I don't know what any of this computer hardrive stuff is or what they do. I just need a good gaming PC from either Frys or Best Buy in the areas of 500 to 1200$. I would like to know which to get?

What games do you plan on playing, on what settings, what else do you want to do with it, do you need a monitor/mouse/keyboard, laptop/desktop, etc.

EDIT: Start looking here.

If you want to look online, you can try companies like iBuyPower, CyberPower PC and DigitalStorm. They make gaming PCs.

Games mostly like:
Civilizations 5
Shogun II
Empire Total war
Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Starcraft II
Skyrim
Mass Effect trilogy
Planetside 2
Anno 2070
mostly on high or ultra high settings

Good luck finding a computer that can run those games on ultra high settings for $1200.

You can get a laptop that runs all of those on high or ultra at 1920x1080 30+ fps for under $1000. And if you're okay bumping the resolution down to 1366x768 for games, you can max out anything.

I'm not very knowledgeable about desktops, though.

I am looking at a gaming PC myself, my potential rig is in the $1500 to $1600 dollar range. Including an Intel i7 processor and 32 GB of RAM.

I know you don't want to hear it, but if you're serious about getting a good gaming desktop under $1200, DIY is really the only option.

EDIT: In fact, as none of the games you listed are particularly demanding in 2013, I'd recommend splitting the $1200 between building a gaming PC and getting an HDTV to play it on. If you need tutorials, they are all over the internet.

Here in Italy computer parts sellers (the online ones as well) usually provide a service of assembly and even install of the OS for an additional 30-50€ (they just ship the assembled pc). I would be surprised if there's nothing like that in the US or wherever you live.

The only thing is that you'll need a full configuration made for you, and I'm not entirely sure there are people on CFC who do that. You could try with the Tom's Hardware forum to help you out (again I'm not very practical of the English ecosystem, but I'm sure there are forums where people do this)
