I was on the internet last night and a DriveCleaner2006 (I've never had Drive Cleaner2006 on my pc before) window randomly popped up, and started scanning my computer and supposedly found 16,912 Privacy Violations in the form of:

Windows Recycle Bins
Typed URLs
IE URL History
Windows Clipboard History
User Temporary Folder
IE Cache
IE Cookie
Windows Temp. Folder
Standard open/save dialogue
Windows Recently Accessed
IE Download Installs
Temporary Files
Windows Prefetch Content
Backup Files
Help Temporary Files

They were assessed in the range from low => severe severity

It basically said that if I do not clean them now, my career and marriage could be at risk, and my credit card history due to searching for Adult Content online. What I want to know is if this whole Drive Cleaning thing is really something serious, or if it is just some pop-up thing that doesn't really know all that it claimed to know about the Privacy Policy things that have "supposedly" been violated. And the only option for them to be cleaned through DriveCleaner 2006 is to register the version of it I downloaded on the internet. This is leading me to believe either it is very serious, and I should find some way to clean it, paying or not, or it is just some scam and these "Privacy Policies" were conveniently created in statistical format to scare me into giving them money. It looks very official though so Im worried. Have you guys had anythign like this before? I need help!!!!

Its a pop up. Its BS. Its a scam. Get a browser with a pop up blocker.

Was the whole "scannning process" where it found specific numbers of each under these Privacy Violation categories a scam as well then? Because it wasn't a traditional pop-up, it looked pretty legit.
And I do have pop-up blockers, so thats why it is confusing.

Did you right click on the window to see if it was an animated gif or flash? Did you check the icon in the upper left to see if it was your browser? Was your hard drive light flickering as it was being "scanned"? Did the scan take a minute or more to completly scan your hard drive?

I've seen these pop ups all the time, they even get through my popup blocker. They "scan" my computer when its nothing more than an animated file.

The first rule of critical thinking is catering your belief to the evidence.
1) This program is making the claim that only it can clean these things, while I can tell you exactly how to do it yourself.
2) Windows does not have a clipboard history.
Its a standard scam, if you want I can tell you how to take care of these thing as its good to keep windows clean, but it is totally a scam.

Ah, thank you. I'll double check to make sure its not a scam. What can I do though to take care of these things as you said?

And if it is scanning your hard drive without you installing anything, then you have a major security leak =P . It scanning your hard drive without you authorizing it is a security violation in and of itself, anyways, I am quite sure its just a animated graphic.

Windows Recycle Bins: Just empty it
Typed URLs: Not sure what this is implying, probably the list that pops down when you type in a url. Clearing this will be found in browser options or prefrences.
IE URL History: Also under options.
Windows Clipboard History: Windows has no clipboard history
User Temporary Folder: Open windows explorer. Go to tools --> folder options, click on view tab. Select show hidden files. Uncheck hide extensions of known file types and hide system files. Hit apply then apply to all folders. Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<your account name>\temp. Delete everything in that folder older than a week. If there is no temp folder, don't worry about it.
IE Cache: Check browser settings
IE Cookie: Check browser settings
Windows Temp. Folder: Go to C:\windows\temp, delete files and folders older than a week
Standard open/save dialogue: Not sure what this means
Windows Recently Accessed: Again, not sure what this means, but follow this guide for disabling document history
IE Download Installs: Not sure what this means, but delete the files you download after you install them.
Temporary Files: Covered
Windows Prefetch Content: Unneeded
Backup Files: Under c:\windows you will see folders with the name $NtUninstall...$, delete the ones older than two months. Right click on c:\, select properties. Click on disk clean up and select everything.
Help Temporary Files: Covered

I am sure others will have other ways of going about it, but a lot of these things arnt "privacy violations"

Here's a link to information on DriveCleaner:

It is a scam plain and simple.

Follow the directions to remove any remnants of the thing.

If you want to do a good clean-up on your box download a copy of CCleaner from CCLeaner.com. It's a freebie that works great. It the first thing I use whenever I go to clean up an infected machine.
