IA Declares War For Me! Why?

Twice near the end of a game the IA has declared war on a border neighbor in my name - I have no control over this. Why? How can I avoid it?

There seemed to be no technical reason why my civ should attack the border civ - they were inside their borders and I had nothing to gain, I was way ahead.

Nah, I had a vassal - Korea - but Wank On wasn't at war with anyone - in fact, Mongolia (who I declared on) wasn't at war with anyone either. Nor was I. And this happened twice - earlier I spontaneously and against my own will declared on the Celts, on my southern border. I did a reload, made a bunch of friendly gestures toward them, and that worked. But I found no reason in the game why I would attack them - no treaties, no incursions, nothing. Very disconcerting, since I have no control over it.

The AI desides to declare war on you... Not for you... on you...

Those two times the AI declared war *for me* - in my name - I'll just keep an eye out for repetitions in future games. And on this forum to see if anyone else recognizes the phenomenon.

Er, are you sure you're not declaring on someone who has a DP or a vassal. When you declare on someone with one of those, it acts like you declare on the vassal too.

Something like that happened to me in a game. I was playing Cathy and though I did nothing, the game suddenly declares war on Alexander. I replayed the sequence several times and got the same outcome. The best guess I have is that 'Cathy' got mad at Alexander for ending some trade deals.

I made the best of the war declaration and bombarded a couple of Alexander's cities with destroyers and took another city on an island. :mischief:

Are you sure it's not them declaring war on you?

When it happened the first time, I thought Alex had declared war on me, but it wasn't the case; I had declared war on him, though I hadn't contacted him to declare war or attacked any of his units, and since we had Open Borders, I was moving freely through his territory with missionaries.

My best guess is that Cathy didn't take too well to Alex's trade deal cancellation and declared the war.

Also, I had defensive pacts with two of Alex's neighbors, Saladin and Cyrus if I recall, so they were dropped with the war declaration. Strangely though, Alexander declared war on Saladin and Cyrus declared war on Alex.

I had wondered that at first, but I went back and dug out the save and reloaded it. At the beginning of the turn in 1989ad, I hear the horns of DOW and see on the log on the upper left saying Alex has cancelled three trade deals I had with him, then the DOW. After that, (going bottom to top) is the cancellation of defensive pacts with Saladin and Cyrus.

After I take care of some city production business, the DOW horns sound again with Alexander declaring war on Cyrus and Saladin with the DOW on Alex.

I attached a save, but I'm not sure if it will work. It's from an imac. edit-- It's vanilla civ4, so I guess I'm crossposting just a little, though the DOW situation is in the spirit of the thread.

No problem at all. Alex DOWs on Cyrus, who posesses a DP with both you and Sal, so you and Sal DOW on Alex.

Open the log (top left corner) to see what happened. The messages you see in the main screen are not in the correct order, as are the sound of the horns.
