I just developed the Manhattan Project, I have Fission, nukes, and ICBMs. However, when I try to launch ICBMs, they only have a range of 1, and are therefore completely useless.

Is there something else I have to do in order to be able to launch an ICBM?

Thanks.

Right, I know, but when I click the red button, it tells me to choose a square to nuke, but when I click on an enemy city, nothing happens.

IIRC you also need to make sure to avoid friendly fire, ie you can't nuke your target if it's near to a neutral civ's boarder or some neutral civ's units are in the surrounding squares.

I *think* the same is true if it would mean killing off some of your own units, but it's been quite a while since I used them so I may be wrong here.

Yeah, both neutral, ally, and your own units cannot be touched, only enemy.

Not true, you can nuke your own units. I know as I've done this repeatedly by accident.

When Archipaliagos (im sure i misspelled that the islands maps) are eaten by it and the entire climate flips over on the entire planet (deaserts/plains to tundra/ice and ice/tundra to deaserts/plains) then it might be considered an intreasting feature, sorta. (still not to intreasting as it never ends and is triggered by nukes/nuke plants alone)

No you can't. Even an invisible spy will prevent you from nuking an area.

yes you can, at least in BtS. i hurt my own marines last week in BtS patch 3.13. they weren't on the square i nuked, but they were close enough. i hadn't realized they'd get scratched, oopsies. i was using Bhruic's patch. he changed something for spies to not get ejected from borders when you declare war, but nothing about normal troops that would have any impact on nuke behavior as far as i know.

I just checked, and it seems that behavior changed from Warlords to BtS. I also have the unofficial patch installed, so it's conceivable that "vanilla" BtS still prevents strikes when your own units would be damaged.

It still prevents you from nuking territory or units of anyone you're not at war with.

aha! i wasn't nuking my own territory, i'm not that crazy! i was just responding to the "no you can't" about nuking your own units.. i apologized to them, it wasn't on purpose. i really didn't know they'd be hurt!

There's been times I wished I could nuke my own territory...like when a huge stack of tanks+artillery is bearing down on a city defended by two lone Infantry.... :(

You can nuke your own territory, but you have to use tactical nukes you can't use ICBMs,
I know this because I just nuked my own land to get rid of some modern armor wielding barbarians.
