We've all seen 'em,

They go

Moderator action
Infraction listed, action told
Link to rules

I think that is all well and good, but I think you tack this on the end
"If you have any questions or comments please PM me or thunderfall, opening a new thread about it will only cause further problems"

That way a lot of people won't put up whiney threads about why moderators are ninnies.

Note: Perfection does not endorse the view that any moderator on CFC is a ninnie and believes they are all intelligent repsectful and extremely good-looking.

Here's another suggestion: when you post a moderator action, alert the moderated poster!

Often enough they simply do not notice and therefore continue to post in the same 'style'.

That's something I've always wondered about ... does a moderator action come with a PM. For instance, if a moderator says "Dralix, you have 10 seconds to remove that post and PM me an explanation before I ban you" and I don't read the thread again, I might not even know I did anything wrong.

I always PM the poster if I want them to do something - contact me for example - as well as posting in the thread. Alas it seems that some dont read their PMs - and some read them and ignore them.

Well I'd only rate 2 out of 3.

Yes, moderations commonly come with a PM.

for instance one of the PMs in my box right now reads:

Warned for Flaming

from Lefty Scaevola.

Last I checked, everyone's beloved moderator action text was a set of tags. Something tells be it would be difficult to edit the effect of the moderator action tags, and that Thunderfall would be unwilling to dive so deep into the vBulletin program, or at least unwilling until we get vB 3.0...

Yes, they are Moderator Action: tags. I have tried it before (only once, and only as a test, and eyrei edited my message out with "don't do that again") to test it out, and it works for everybody, not that I would recommend doing it.
Please read the forum rules: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=422889
Moderator Action:

That's usually an auotmatic ban. He must have been in a really good mood. :)

I sent a pm to myself and gave it a try thats some nice work there Thunderfall, did you do that yourself?

but thats not dark red, its even darker then dark red. What color is it?

Gee, Immortal, I don't know... Maybe you should try it out yourself... ;)

Seriously, yes, that's how it works. It says Moderator Action: [what you typed within the tags] please read the forum rules: [forum rules link]

ha! I beat you by mere seconds, thus saving me from an unfortunate stupidity comment!

I was only notified on one of my two bans - the other I didn't know about till I read one of my posts after noticing I couldn't post.

It should be a rule that PMs are sent too.

You would be amazed at the number of people who do something really stupid on a regular basis and then fall into one of the three self-inflicted head wound categories of:
1) Disabled PM and/or email
2) PM active but inbox on permanent overfill
3) email technically active but messages bounce due to all sorts of email out of date problems.

Moderator actions fall into a lot of categories. In the technical gaming forums we do a lot of little things like image fixes, <snips> on spoilers, and member support things like merges and post consolidations. Most of these are not slap on the wrist type moderator actions that most people may be familiar with in OT and other less structured areas so you see a whole lot less PM's or emails about the fixes.

Also, because there are so many good examples of what is expected, you generally see alot less fringe behavior. Some people view all moderator actions as bad, but in general many of the things we do are more like when a tow truck pulls you out of the ditch and gets you lined up back on the road again. When some people tend to keep ending up in the ditch, you do start to begin being a bit more proactive with the "don't go there" and "Let's try this instead" approaches. You may be seeing a bit more of this now that some of the OT mods are focusing on facilitating some stronger patterns in the different specialty forums.

For the negative behavior issues, I tend to believe that when someone runs up and craps on the front porch of some public building then they can pretty much figure out why they find the gate padlocked the next time they return. It's not like we have a lot of identity theft where you can say "Hey, it wasn't me somebody else must have use my login and done that stupid thing."

There is also the franticness factor that says if you are posting so many messages with marginal behavior in them that you can't figure out why you got in trouble then that in itself becomes a signal.

The PM system tracks whether messages are read or not and I usually leave these active for up to 3 months before I delete the tracking and decide that obviously that was a waste of effort because the person was never tuned in anyway.

I have been warned once for nation bashing and was not PM-ed. I just found by accident I was warned.....
