Idea: Special Artifacts for Hidden Antiquity Sites

I've updated the original post. I've left out two: the Uluburun Shipwreck and the Jordan Lead Codices. The reason for the former is just that the game mechainisms don't seem to account for underwater archaeology (I get the impression that the Oseberg ship was found on land, but I could be wrong, in which case it would be removed). The Jordan Lead Codices is just of disputed authenticity, which I hestitate to suggest should be in the game (lest it later be discovered to be a fake).

However, excellent suggestions. I've moved Venus of Willendorf near the top of the list. I can't believe I forgot about it. The list is very Egyptian and Bible heavy at the moment, though. Anyone with knowledge of Native American, African, or Asian (not SW Asian) artifacts? I added the Aksum Obelisk for that reason. I also added the Stele of the Vultures (which depicted Sumerian warfare) even though it clearly fits into the category I was just complaining about, so feel free to keep suggesting things even if it falls into this category.

to dig dinosaurs or mammoths, you need a paleontologist, not an archaeologist :)
btw dinosaur sites may appear with biology (or maybe there should be a Darwin Voyage project revealing dinosaur sites to all players)

ps: i kinda fond of this idea, there could be different dinosaurs like diplodocus, iguanodon, t-rex etc and you could get theming bonuses for collecting jurassic, triassic or cretacerous dinosaurs.

Fair enough. I think it's less well-known, though. But the list is big enough to accommodate both of them ;)

I really like archeology, I always like to research on archeology and history so for me it was enjoyable :D

I've been thinking if it would be interesting to include cities destroyed as Caral and Mohenjo-daro

Good ideas. Too much of a bonus culture generation from these hidden artifacts would be unbalanced though, so I'd suggest making some of the special artifacts have the same culture/tourism as regular artifacts, but maybe with a nice one-time bonus?

And of course, don't forget those guys that came before the dinosaurs, Dimetrodons, Trilobites, and of course, don't forget the Devonian big shielded sea warrior, the Dunkleosteus.

Xandinho, great list. I've added them to the first post. I didn't use the Ica stones because their veracity is highly questioned (I'm doing my best to avoid hoaxes).

Phrozen, I like your choices as well. I've added them to the list. I'm skipping places for now. Maybe a separate list for that at the bottom would be appropriate.

Thanks, I would like to have found more African artifacts, but only found two

I love the idea of this mod

Yeah, now all that needs to happen is somebody makes it :p

A frozen mammoth like they keep finding in Siberia.

Speaking of which, wouldn't it be neat if paleontological Artifacts could be used to generate Science when put in slots in Universities and Research Labs? Or relics being used to generate Faith when in Temple slots? Archaeology could be really expanded on.

I agree
The artifacts could be divided: some would generate only science, others only faith, and others culture and tourism

I like the idea.
New ideas for artifacts: Lord of Siphan's Tomb and The Crystal Skulls

I'm horrible at XML, but modding it can't be that hard, surely. (Famous Last Words)

I'll see what I can do with it tomorrow, anyway. Any good modders around? Also, it may be far too unrealistic, but the Holy Grail? It was in an Indiana Jones movie, and the devs seem to love "keeping up with the Joneses", so it is, strangely, a possibility.
