So I really like looking at maps. I tend to want to play large or huge maps because...moar map. The sad part is that the bigger maps tend to be a little sparsely populated, especially since building more than a few cities seems to not work so well in Civ V (I only recently converted from IV). What do people recommend for number of civs/CS on a large or huge map? I don't want to drag the game speed down too badly, but non military wins seem a little cheap when hardly anyone is around to challenge me.

For a large, non-islands map, I'll usually load up 16-17 civs. This usually results in few "unsettled" areas but still enough room to expand peacefully (and plenty of other civs to attack...) A huge map would probably need more like 20 civs.

For my favorite game of all time, I used a huge map with 18 civs and 18 city-states.

I also bumped MIN_CITY_RANGE up to 5, forcing the AI to space its cities out just a bit more. It worked like a charm, and we had one hell of an intense game. Towards the middle and end (this was pre-BNW), there was so much going on that it was really fun having to try to keep track of it all.

Thanks for this what game speed did you use?
