Just been thinking maybe part 2 will never show but that doesn't stop us from thinking up a good story :D what i got thus far wich would work for a sequel i believe.

After loosing contact with the spaceship the people at Earth were forced to believe that their finale project had been a failure. In a joint operation of many countries a new ship was created, but because of the small building time humanity had to find a planet closer by earth wich would be able to substain humanoid life forms. Just after this ship had been constructed such a planet was found thus course is set to this planet just before the destruction of the earth (would make for a nice intro movie :D )

In the meantime on Alpha Centauri conflict between the Progenitors and the Usurpers was reaching a climax. Many human factions were already chosing sides to try and survive the hard times. After a discovery made by the University and the Gaians it seemed the planet it selve was suffering the most under this conflict and the idea started for a swift evacuation.

At one point Alpha Centauri started to lose its vertility and all that was left were the wars being waged on it. And still the planet was going worse the given factions didnt have enough time to evacutate everyone and so a hand full of people per faction escaped before the planet died off. (this way not every faction comes back in the sequel :) ) Course was set for a distant planet wich substained humanoid lifeforms yet they didnt know the given ship from Earth was going to this exact planet.

In the meantime the ship coming from Earth was having some internal conflicts and even though the people worked togheter factions were already forming.

The planet these two were going to wasnt empty for an alien race had crash landed there 2 years before starting a small and peacefull society within the planet. Little did they know their peacefull and enlightend society was about to be rudely interupted.
Upon arrival the factions from Alpha Centauri and Earth started to spread out as soon as they could claiming as much land as they could and thus the story starts.

Fun part of this would be that then you get a massive planet the bigger the better :) . And the computer will then generate 8 out of the 14 Original/Expansion factions, next to that another 7 new factions from earth and 1 alien faction already on the planet.

Would be great if it was possible to also build underwater or even in the skies it selve. But maybe im going a bit overboard now on ideas ;)

Anyway post your fun ideas here as well

nice story but aint Alpha centari the nearest star to Earth so how can a closer to Earth?

mabey another planet in the centari system

or this

here are some ideas the progenotor factions where wiped out by a combined alliance of the factions. But some excaped and launched a attack on earth

people on earth where already in termoial because of decades of Nuclear war so over a billion people from Earth are dead but a SOS from earth tells the people of AC that humanity is still alive so they send aid and weapons to the people but on the way a mothership from the nearby star system intersepetd the AC fleet a began attacking them. that is all i have for now but feel free to add to the story

here is some more the mother ship where aliens called the Xi who where enemys of the progentor race they thought that the human alliance was progenitor asnd attack the humans but they found out the humans whey enemys or the progenitor as well so they helped save Earth. back on AC a new alien ship arived and crashed landed on Ac the aliens where human but not from earth but from the orion star system the humans fought to protect Ac but once agian splip in to factions

Alpha Centauri actually is a system of 3 stars bound by gravitation, the tiniest, a faint red dwarf called Alpha Centauri C (or Proxima Centauri or Rigel Kentaurus), is the closest, I wonder if this the one Sid intended in the game or is it one of the others, it barely sounds habitable to me, whereas Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B, slightly further away, are very like our own Sun

Why does AC2 have to be a continuation of the AC story? Civ II wasn't 2050 -3050 AD. AC2 should be for AC what Civ III was for Civilization. They could use new graphics, a more involved unit creation system, and much better mod-ability. You could even add in multiple alien types and even later have the Planet as a leader you must communicate with.

I'm not sure Sid had any planet around any of the Alpha Centauri Solar bodies. It is unlikely that a planet could survive in the massive gravitation fields created by three orbiting stars. It was the closest star system and the mission in the previous Civ games.

As for the Earth factoring in again, maybe you could decide as a start-up option whether a new expedition would randomly appear later in the game(most likely hostile). Techs allowing for floating cities would be cool, especially if you could eventually make some for space,(and possible moons).

In the manual that comes with AC, a lot of the 'hard science' is explained, and shows that theoretically, an earthlike planet could orbit Alpha Centauri A. Alpha Centauri B would orbit at around the range of Saturn, thus no gas giants, while Alpha Centauri C would orbit both very far away.

How about an honest to goodness tech tree that every faction can use? It's in the Datalinks, after all.

It would be interesting to see how the old system of making units could be combined with Civ IV's new unit and combat system.

I'd like a covert faction that has to be searched for and detected before it is revealed. Maybe all human factions using hidden bases to start on a world mostly populated by gunpowder age alien Civs. Like planet but with it's own factions splitting off and tech evolution.

We must desist

Hm.. it's hard to say, really. Alpha Centauri is significantly different from the Civilization series, in that it has a definite story line. So, I'm not sure to simply rehash and improve it would be satisfactory.

However.. I'd really like to see the unit production system applied to Space Ships. Before Civ2 came out and I was dreaming of an Alpha Centauri type sequal, I dreamed of being able to customize spaceships in a very similar way to how the implemented it in the units of Alpha Centauri.

Actually, a lot of the improvements they've made to the Civ games through the years have echoed my original wishes in reaction to Civ1. XD

Acually the nearest star to Earth besides the Sun is Alpha Centauri's cousin, Proxima Centauri.

As explained above, that's not true - Proxima Centauri is part of the Alpha-Centauri-System, it's just further away. Anyways, being a red dwarf, the chances of inhabitable planets orbiting it would be slim.

IF there will be a AC2, it probably will be a remake or a Mod for Civ4 (seeing as Colonization is just returning..), not a continuation/spin-off of the story.
I'd be content, if the game would still run properly on XP and would be available, it was more captivating than Civ4 most often is.

So what is the nearest star to Earth besides the sun?

The triple star Alpha Centauri, where Alpha Centauri C (Proxima) is currently the nearest component. The distance difference is negligible from a traveling point of view, though (4.22 versus 4.34 light years), it wouldn't make a nice story to shorten the journey by 1 year for the second Unity - if another star system is wished, there are better alternatives in the Sun's vicinity than a red dwarf.

First of all, there's a mod going around that tries to recreate the original game for Civ IV. Not sure what its status is but it's there.

Now, as for a actual sequel/remake...

- I would like to see the original factions from the first game AND the expansion appear in some form. While the aliens I don't particularly care for, the human ones were all fairly memoriable and worthy foes.
- Focus more on city improvements and less on terrain improvements for the early game. It's a colony on a hostile planet, setting up another city should be a major undertaking until the later stages.

My recommendations for what it is worth.

Adapt Imperium Galactica II to SMAC so you had individual buildings for each of your cities.

Make it a three planet contest in the AC system so you could have spaceships, space battles and planetary conquest. One could be desert, the other jungle and the middle one in the 'Goldilocks zone', i.e. just right. :)

As a strategist gamer it breaks my heart that so many shoot-em up games are being released every month but it is over ten years since we had the last add-on to AC!

If this putative SMAC MOD for Civ III or IV some one please post the URL on this site!

Live long and prosper.

The anti-trascendence thingy of the aliens (caretakers) is a very interesting concept, that reminds me it would have been an interesting plot-turn from the "childhood's end" novel from A.C.Clarke, now what about an hybrid God-like race?, what about a failed trascendence?, how could been Alpha centauri after that event?, how the gaians, cult, Drones (Drones! :)) and all the other factions would been after a failed and no complete trascencence?

Among the "barbarians" creatures could be "mad spirits" from the trascencence...jus an idea..

A new enviorement, a ruined planet, chaotic nature, a dark sceme, a black sea, i see a very dark Alpha Centauri

From that you can imagine a new map, some adds on the gameplay -like psi shrines, for example-, all the races/factions starting from 0, maybe a god-like race, and a psi-faction, and all fits well in the story IMO :)

I ask again; why are we in the minority? Why has the market for space strategy games collapsed in the face of the multiplication of derivatives of shoot-em-up when we know there is a substantial market crying out for SMAC III? :(
