Supernet customers get served
Thursday, July 28, 2005 By Edward Husar
Herald-Whig Staff Writer

Customers of Kirlin SuperNet Inc. now have a new Internet service provider.

The Quincy-based company's customer list has been taken over by Illicom, an Internet provider based in Paxton, near Champaign.

KSNI's 600 customers had been without service since last Thursday — until a deal was worked out allowing Illicom to serve those clients.

Internet access was restored Wednesday, but customers are still not able to access their old e-mail accounts. Kevin Osterbur, general manager of Illicom, said it will take some time to get e-mail services transferred over to Illicom's computer servers. He said the goal is to allow KSNI clients to keep using the same e-mail addresses they have used in the past.

"We're certainly working to get that resolved as quickly as possible," Osterbur said. "We know how important it is for people."

Illicom will not be able to provide any digital subscriber line (DSL) or wireless service to Quincy clients. Osterbur said the company will only provide dialup services.

Osterbur said details are still being worked out on how best to get Quincy customers back online.

"As a temporary basis, for the most part they should be able to use their existing information to access the network," he said. "But we would encourage them to call us and let us verify their information and give them some different dialup numbers."

Osterbur said some KSNI customers may no longer be able to use the same toll-free dialup number they used in the past to access the Internet. He recommended they try the old number first. If it doesn't work, they should try connecting by calling (800) 780-1174.

One big question still unanswered is what will become of the KSNI accounts that were paid in advance by some customers. When asked if Illicom will honor those accounts, Osterbur said: "I really have no information on that. I would recommend that they contact KSNI."

Don Kirlin, president of KSNI, couldn't say if the fees paid in advance by KSNI customers will be honored by the new provider.

"We're just not sure how that's going to work out yet," he said.

When asked if some customers will be out money, he replied: "We don't know yet ... Our whole focus right now has been to get service. That's all we've worked on for the past five days."

Kirlin said KSNI formally changed its name about three months ago to Quincy Networks Inc. in preparation for an attempt to sell the business.
"We've been actually working on the sale of KSNI for several months now," he said.

However, the business still has not been sold, he said.

"The bottom line is, it just worked out that the best thing for the clients was to turn the client base over to Illicom," he said. "They'll just be taking over the services that KSNI used to provide."

Kirlin said he's now not sure if the business will be sold. But he doesn't plan to remain involved.

"I've got too many other involvements with my aircraft business that I just don't have time to be involved with the Internet world any more," he said.

Kirlin said Illicom will be notifying customers about the changes that are taking place.

"Illicom has just been wonderful to work with to expedite this changeover so we could get our customers back online," he said.

Yeah, they got served all right. Sucks to be them!

I dont quite see whats shocking about this, a ISP being taken over and having services down for a week.

There are many rubbish ISPs. My current provider (Tiscali) left me without broadband for three months while they argued over what was causing noise on the line. I paid for those three months, and I paid another ISP for temporary dial-up. Evil!

Hosts suck too, the host for Civfanatics is bloody awful: their servers frequently spit out a server error instead of the requested page.

Heck, the US Navy cannot even keep their pages free of hacker interference.

Once you go to Broadband, going to dail-up is kinda like turning in your cellphone and going back to the telegraph . I feel sorry for those guys...

Too bad broadband in my area is still so expensive (once the six-month introductory rate ends) and is part of a monopoly. Still, I wonder if this is a problem found when you have so many small ISPs, especially when one owner gets out of the business and sells his stuff to another who's looking at ways to run it with expense cuts. I found this out when the quality of my connections began to suffer after a long period of stability, and it seems to have coincided with the business's facilities being brought out or moved to another region.

I use dial-up at home. I survived... :p
I don't know how i survived, especially now having broadband. Occasionally it goes down, but the speed is waht I like.

Yeah. I've only had broadband for about two weeks but it is SO much better then dialup. Instant downloads, great surfing speed, plus I can look at the babe thread. :p
