IGN's Beyond The Sword Guide

LOL.... just read through the sample game.... wow.

Now Im not saying Im any good at this game, because Im not. But there were so many obvious mistakes that he either saw only in retrospect, or never saw at all. In short, that was a pathetic display of CIV gaming that only a newcomer to the civ series would do.... and then only on his first game or two.

Makes me appreciate these forums so much more.

That's what is so special with CFC.

This one is my favourite:
ANALYSIS
If you thought the Ottomans were bad, trust me, the Romans are quite insane as well. Though Rome isn't quite up to the military ability as Germany and Mongolia, they are quite a force in the early turns. Praetorians are enough to turn the tide of early-mid-match wars, and can lead to Rome possessing large amounts of land very quickly. Fight and claw your way to winning, but just don't expand too quickly too fast; that was what brought down the real Rome. Learn from its mistakes.

I have one word for you, just one word: noob :p . Somebody please tell this guy how to do a preat rush, please?

IGN, if you need someone to spend money playing CiV, I'm here... and I'm more qualified than this guy to mak a civ IV guide.... ( at least I know that Pericles exists  )

To add a specialist, I merely hit the + button next to the specialist I want. Usually, a person is pulled off from working the land in order to do this. Because this is Yeha, my science-specialty city, I'll do that just so I get a little more research.

After adding two science specialists, we get this...

My beaker rate is up to 24, and city still grows. That's a 41% boost, at the cost of slowing down the city's growth. That's fine by me... the city is large enough as it is.

24 beakers science specialty...

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I mean, seriously - when people say "science specialist city", they're talking about hundreds of beakers per turn, if not more, not twenty-four!

I just finished reading it all.

He lost the example game on noble difficulty, and got the Dan Quayle rating. I think that sums it up perfectly. The guide was written by a noob who got his arse kicked on noble.

Hwachas get a bonus against melee units, but siege weapons in general are overrated, and shouldn't be relied upon.

:x

I must say that, reading the leaders and civs characteristics, I really have the feeling of reading a guide for age of empires, where once a tech comes online some civilizations get a great bonus and some other don't. Which is not the case in Civ at all: you don't collapse once gunpowder is online just because you don't have a gunpowder based unit for instance...

Considering that the authors speaks one time of Age of Empires: Conquerors (when speaking about aztecs), I wonder if I'm near the truth here.

In the sample game he says he's playing on noble but then gets a free tech from EACH of the two goodie huts early game. That wouldn't happen on noble ;)

Also without starting with Mysticism it would be unlikely he would get Buddhism or Hinduism before an AI would grab it. Meh. I think he's playing on Chieftain :)

I think he used the world builder too.

In one screenshot you see the great wall around a city that hasn't even expanded to the fat cross yet.

I stopped reading the sample game when he decided to prioritize building a Stele very early on despite playing a cre leader.

HE DID USE THE WORLD BUILDER

look:

http://guides.ign.com/guides/896712/page_45.html

Go down to turn 451 where he lost, Look at his minimap! COMPLETELY CLEARED! Impossible, you can get your ships into that Ice in the north and south pole! he went on multiplayer and clicked that button that shows you every singal land in the world.

Actually I think he had satellites at that point.

This guide has inspired my to create my own:

Praets: Praetorians are the weakest military unit in the game. Why? Because 8 strength just doesn't cut it against Combat 3, CR3, Shock Axes. Got it?

Honestly, he didn't include anything about how the Dutch will kick your a** once they get dikes. Dutch+Moai Statues+ Dike+ Ironworks+Fin/Cre (defense and funding)=defeat. And I haven't even gotten to their HE/WP city yet...
