Im Tired of Alexander the Great Being Called Greek

Alexander was Macedonian, Pericles was Athenian, Leonidas was Spartan, Aristotle was from Stagira, a Macedonian city, Demokritus was from Thrace...etc.

All of them were Greeks, because all the above regions were part of the greek world.
If you "french civ fan" know the history of Ancient Greece (and you should because you think anybody with diferent opinion than yours has not brains) you should know that at
ancient Olympic Games were allowed only greek athlets.
Macedonian athlets were at the Games since they started.
End of conversation.

Macedon and greece hated eachother, if Alexander was alive today, he would be outraged if he found out people thought he was the leader of the greeks

ooh this is fun.
lets stir the pot a bit more...
did you know churchill was 1/2 american of which 1/8th was native american?
not a true brit eh??
if he'd gone off to america and become a politician there, he'd have been regarded as american as apple pie. But he didnt, what does that say about history?

Like George Washington

Perhaps the Greeks should be renamed Hellenists. Greece, Macedonia and the Successor States all shared a common Hellenistic Culture. There wasn't a united Greek state anyway, Pericles wasn't leader of Greece, just Athens, and the enemies he fought were other Greeks

No George washington was never the leader of the Brits, he was just a commander in their army..a position that many people had..sorry you fail:lol:

When Im talking about Macedonia and Greece im not trying to get into a culture argument, my point is simple...Alexander considerd himself Macedonian not Greek:lol:

Pericles wasnt leader of the Greeks, your right!..He was leader of the Athens City State and her colonies..though he WAS a Greek so it makes him closer to being Greek then Alexander..Alexander considerd himself Macedonian, Pericles considerd himself a Greek, he was a Greek Leader to be exact...Pericles Ruled Athens, which was Greece..so how can you say he wasnt leader of Greeks?

Macedonians where not Greeks, they just lived around them..Evidence also suggest the Greeks and Macedonians spoke DIFFERENT language due to the fact that when Alexander shouted orders in his NATIVE tongue, he wasnt understood by his Greek Soldiers:lol:

O and should I point out the word GREEK is a modern invention of the British

O and should I also point out that the Macedonians didn't participate in the Olympics until AFTER they conquerd(or united, whichever you prefer, though Military force was used..so you could say conquerd) the Greek City States

Go play Civ 4 already and change it to "Alexander of Macedonia".

No. wait a sec. Alexander was a Greek. You are wrong.

He even had Aristotle as his tutor.

So that makes him greek, That does not make sense, if his tutor was greek, that makes Alexander Greek?

Thats like saying, my teacher is polish so that means that I am polish

You are a great student of logic apparently. I've seen a lot of declarations and statements, but the burden is on French Civ Fan to prove Alexander was not of Hellenic culture. He has not proven anything besides his talent as a troll.

I think it's more important to argue about whether Eck was blonde or black haired.

The vast majority of historians consider the Macedonians ethnically and culturally Greek. The theory that they were weren't originally Greek, but were later hellenized was a somewhat common theory around 100 years ago, but more recent archeological discoveries have made belief in the theory very rare among historians.

Alexander did consider himself Greek. Some of his ancestors, Alexander I, Archelaus I, and Philip II, competed in the Olympic Games, an event that Greeks were allowed to participate in. Philip II competed 3 times, each before conquered Greece.

On the Macedonian Language, there were many dialects of Ancient Greek. Little is known about Macedonian, but it is commonly considered to be one of those dialects. Although that doesn't really matter since Macedon adopted Attic Greek, the dialect used in Athens, about 150 years before Alexander was born. Macedonian was only spoken far into the countryside by the by the time of Alexander.

Also, Corsica was officially annexed by France in 1770, a year after Napoleon was born.

what a stupid flame-fest of a thread. Ill be the bad guy here.

Like it or not, Alexander is known as greek - Greeks are slavic people and not Macedonian people, and Alexander, a Macedonian united the greek tribes. Therefore, he is a legend to greece and they claim him their own. Think about Ghandi, wasn't he british? Why is he an india leader? and why is Washington an america leader, wasn't he born in britan thus making him british? did he even live long enough to see the actual "first born" generation of euro-americans? not as in "first born childeren of the colonies" but the first born childeren of the "united states of america" - he was not american, he wasn't even born in america!

It is sad whats happening to Macedonia - but cultural icons are stolen all the time. Ask a french and German standing together weather Charlemagne was a german or french leader - then ask if HRE was really a french-german or a german-france. you might want an asprin first.

The point is that there is no reason to flame about this matter of thing, and if there is - then it does not belong in the BTS forum, as the issue pertains more to customer service.

Now, go into your files, and mod all references from Alexander from Greece to Macedon and you can even rename him to "Macedon Alex the Wonderbunny" if you like.

Also, Corsica was officially annexed by France in 1770, a year after Napoleon was born.

That is a awful argument. By that order of things, everyone born between 1940-44 in Poland and France was German and all the babies born in Iraq since 2003 are Americans

Lets have the greek leader be "Jason of the Argonauts" - this should avert all angers.
