Goodbye Paris, good morning London
Greetings, Immortals and would-be Immortals (and indeed any other players of any level), and welcome to the Immortal University.

Here is our Leader:

Here's the opening scene:

The following settings were used to create this map

And the Demographics for people to spot any info they can (sorry 'bout the high def'):

Before we start, here's the copy & paste bit of the IU motto:

To play, just extract the WB save file into your worldbuilder saves directory, then play it. Use custom scenario if you want some extra settings to tickle your fancy. This series was designed for people learning immortal, so most people here will be at that level or trying to attain it, although deity players are welcome also. Hell, if you want to play this on NOBLE. The intention of this and any other IU game thread is to get better. Play whatever level you need in order to improve.

If you are aspiring IMM+, try to remember to add archery back to the barbs in WB. Every time you don't, a deity AI will kill a kitten, although there are a lot of kittens so it's not the end of the world if you prefer easymode barbs. If you don't know how, here are the guidelines copyrighted from the Noble's Club:
Spoiler how to add techs to the barbarians :

  1. Zoom in all the way so you can't see the rest of the map.
  2. Use the CTRL-W key (or the menu) to enter the worldbuilder. Avoid looking at the mini-map in the lower right corner.
  3. By default you're in "player" mode (look in the box in the upper right; the icon that looks like a person should be selected). You'll get a drop down menu labeled with your leader's name. Barbarians are at the bottom, so cover the rest of the list with your hand if you don't want to see who else is on the map. Select "Barbarians".
  4. Select the "Technologies" tab in the box on the left.
  5. Find Archery (the arrow head icon; 8th row, 3rd column from the right) and click it.
  6. Exit the worldbuilder.
  7. Zoom out again after the map fades, and start playing.
I do request people to list their difficulty and speed. In terms of updates, well nobody follows that anyway. Post in the manner you feel comfortable. Typical comparison dates are 1 AD, liberalism, and victory/defeat, as well as any major events. If in doubt, go with that.

We also have an initial Immortal/Normal autosave which is much more convenient since you can avoid all the worldbuilder shenanigans. It comes with my personal seal of approval (not least as my worldbuilder edits may contain hideous game-destroying errors that could cause your computer to explode).

Map making details 'n' stuff:
Spoiler :
Big & Small, standard everything. All AIs chosen manually

You have room to expand but the game still should be challenging...
Spoiler modifications :
- Added 1 opponent
- Added 1 tile so that the only isolated AI could reach others by land.

I think we can say confidently that the cow is the only food here. Looks like 2 FPs to the W and a forests everywhere else uncovered.

And there's tundra so we are at the north end.

I like moving south here if the scount reveals something. We could block a southerly neighbor or put us closer and stifle their expansion, and there's not a lot we'd be giving up beside the cow.

Funny that all the leaders around are
Spoiler :
imperialistic
Spoiler :
Imperial Asiatic Men? (Who can get this reference??)

Edit: Wrong we've got
Spoiler :
all the leaders around

and they all have
Spoiler :
different favorite civics

Wonder who is the last dude

wanted to get into this again after more than a year of absence; I can't seem to run these saves on my newly installed civ build. cannot load version 302, 300 expected or lower is the error message. any suggestions as to how to fix this? installing the newest patch (v1.61 ?) doesn't work, says I already have a newer one.

ah, never mind. there is a separate patch for BTS. should be fine when I get that installed.

initial thoughts on start:

Spoiler :
if there is no extra food in the hidden tiles, the start looks a little food-constrained, but it's by no means crippled. gold at start is always excellent and the cows will provide much needed extra hammers that make up for working the somewhat sub-par farmed flood plains tile. definitely something i can work with. settle in place is a bit of a no-brainer here; really don't see anywhere moving to would make much sense.

Looks like FPs over to the west. Perhaps settle for the gold then move the capitol west later? Gotta explore a little bit to see what is feasible.

Emperor 1840 Culture

Spoiler :
Scouted to the 1SE and 1S on turn 1. Didn't see much, so moved settler onto desert hill and spotted the pigs. Settled on a FP and revealed a corn in BFC. Opened Ag-AH. Turned capital into NE/NP city. Settled specialists in capital and slowly settled along the river to block the troll Jiao best I could. Didn't get Oracle or MoM but did get a bunch of other marble wonders. Monty was a big help as he was a heathon and was at one point warring with Asoka, Hatty, and Jiao. I kept an eye on it but his only real threat was Jiao who took one city over the course of 500 years or so. That kept tech down and allowed me to Lib PP around 1100. Good leader, good start, good game.

Spoiler :

Very funny. You get a next door neighbour who is exp and Imp and has 50 million ton of food to boot. Already ragequit quite a few times as it is imperative to halt Joao's as quick as possible. But when you loose vs scouts, lions and bears all the time the whole thing is ruined.

Spoiler :
I'm in the 400s bc, having just concluded a war with major back pain Joao. Maybe a slightly controversial decision to wipe him out since there was a lot of land left to settle and other AIs were just waiting for the opportunity to steal some, but Joao got ahold of the floodplain area to my west and the land to my south didn't look all that great for short term expansion purposes. The war took relatively long, as it typically does vs imperialists and when using 3 cities + iron, but had a lot of good spoils. I own quite a bit of cottageable land now and have rid myself of a neighbor who cramped my style. Monarchy is in, no lack of happiness or uses to put it towards. My next decision should be by how much to downsize my army. Right now the maintenance costs are crippling so keeping it at current size is out of the question. Monty is next to me now, but has a different religion from all the others. Shouldn't be hard to keep him contained.

Spoiler :

Effectively won the game in 1500 AD.

As expected, Joao took the yummy FP/corn/gold spot very early. I settled St Petersburg at the clam/pig/deer site by the coast since that one seemed most threatened by Joao. 3rd and 4th cities went along the river towards the southeast.
I didn't expand to the east at all (Charlie eventually went there), didn't seem too attractive. Won Music GA, Lib and Economics thanks to strong early economy with several GS (3 academies, 2 bulbs).
I first attacked Joao with maces/cats, took the FP site and 3 or 4 other cities he settled to my south and southwest. Hit him again with rifles/cats/trebs a little later to take his core and make him capitulate. He still had 8 cities, so could contribute a bit.
Next, I went for Mansa with rifles/cannons. He had expanded into the islands to a total of 17 cities, although most were still being developed. He capitulated after losing 3 of his core cities, which I then returned back to him.

Monty capped to Charlie and Asoka to Justinian. At this point, I have a choice of going for space, or trying to take out the others in turn and go for Dom or conquest. They're far behind in tech, no threat either way.

Well, finally on my 5th try after some ragequitting early on. Won conquest 1520 AD.

Spoiler :

So, the whole game is more or less won if you can prevent Joao from settling towards you. I went with a few early warriors and just made life hard on Joao by stealing a couple of workers, destroying his improvements and preventing him from settling a 2nd city towards me. Once I settled my 2nd town by the fps and gold I made peace.
I quickly settled 2 more cities north and south to totally block him off and he was a non factor the rest of the game. With 2 gold mine cities early teching went ok and allowed for some expansion to the east and south. Monty was getting dangerous as he got all 3 barb cities south of me pretty early and went up to 10 cities. Early on itr was split between buddism and Hindu but Monty went on missonary spam mode and soon all were in buddism. So before he would start to like Charlie I bribed Monty on him as Charlie is the most capable of withstanding him. They more or less hated eachother for the rest of the game after that. That meant noone could declare on my as only Hatty and Mansa were in different religions. Joao did dow me after a while but he had a pathetic stack that died right away. With these civs the tech pace was pretty fast and I easily lost out on music. As soon as monty made peace with Charlie I bribed dowed Charlie and bribed hatty on him. Then I made peace with Charlie and Monty dowed Hatty instead. Then Justinian dowed Hatty while Charlie dowed Monty. I was sitting there nicely teching eco and libbed MT. While Justinian was at war with his stack far away I dowed him with some cossaks. Before his stack came back he capped which let me use his stack against Charlie instead. One by one they fell as I prevented anyone else to get rifling. Oh, as usual Mansa just peacevassaled out of nowhere after I had capped Justinian. An easy game ONCE you prevent Joao from settlerspamming. I was forced to bribe Charlie and Monty off not to get Hatty as a vassal.

Pengu, ragequitting, noooo...!

*vague reminding of your past bad luck and ragequitting series* ;)

Immortal 250AD

Spoiler :
This map seems very large, and I'm afraid to see just how large.

There were a number of possible ways to play this one at the start. Even with Joao settling in our face and taking the best FP spot there's still enough room for quite a few cities, a fairly decent cottage capitol on the FPs, and marble to go with our Philo trait (TGL, etc). Bulbing and teching to Lib would be fairly easy providing you could avoid war.

I didn't go that route though. Joao irked me so i used the gold to tech HBR. Of course i had to settle a pretty junky and remote city on the east coast just to get horses and by the time i got enough assembled Joao had like 8 cities. I DoWed a couple turns before i wanted to because he had a 2-settler party heading somewhere to the S of me that i didn't want to get loose. I got Monty involved in the war then took that settler party out and captured a few more of his cities including his capitol (which had an Academy) before making peace for Currency. He had a bunch of swords and spears and losses were getting a little too high to continue.

I teched Construction next and got an Ivory trade with Monty for some phants. That let me more or less finish of Joao. He had two remote cities on some sort of land bridge to the west that i didn't feel like going after so i traded Philo to Mansa for Feudalism and got made Joao a vassal. I hated to give up Philo, especially to a guy like Mansa that's probably going to try to get Lib now, but dragging out that war with Joao when i really wanted to get on with the game and get my capitol moved to Lisbon would've been worse IMO.

I think I've located Mansa past Joao's remaining cities and i also have Asoka just south of that with only 3 cities so i could take either of them out fairly easily i believe.

Still unsure if i should go for Engineering or try to bulb on to Lib...

Threw the towel in around 1700 AD. I could have won, but it was just not fun anymore to
Spoiler :
manage 22 cities and still have two civs with 22 cities each to kill and Mansa bringing up the rear with 14 cities. :nope:
