Immortal University 55 - Ramesses II

Quick Update, Third session, up to turn 129, 350AD
Spoiler :
Discovered Civil Service and Switched to Bureaucracy in the previous turns, then Traded it:

and targeted Paper, which is being researched at the rate of 204:science:/turn, about 100:science:/turn more than 10 turns earlier.
The Empire is doing pretty well: the Workers are finishing up with Farming the MidLands Valley, while most of the cities are already equipped with Library and Granary, the few others will very soon. The coastal cities are planned to build the lasts Fishing Boats and Lighthouses. Memphis and Elephantine are going to be the Barracks cities and care of putting up an army in the following years. Almost all cities are both growing and running scientists.

After some other Great Scientist built the Academy in the capital, Galileo Galilei has born few turns ago, and settled there, hoping he's the first of a long series of high-brained guys residents of Thebes: the city alone already generates 127.75 :science:/turn.

I'm pretty confident there is a decent chance to be first to Liberalism without bulbing anything.

So far, playing not aggressively, Immortal doesn't seem harder than Emperor. I mean, after 2.5 games on Immortal, I have the impression that war is definitively way harder, while a peaceful game is not so different.
Again... I'm saying this based on a very little experience and... so far.

No cheats, no reloads, ScreenShots in the spoiler, Save Game attached.
Any comment is welcome (ehm... I just can't promise I will follow your advices :D). :)

I'll check-out the other spoiler as soon as I'm done with my game.

Greetings.

yatta, that's quite late to be putting an academy in your capital, was that your first great scientist?

Nope. The first who settled (see Screen Shot). I wanted to specify that I already had the Academy :)
First Great Scientist: 350BC (Academy); Second Great Scientist: 250AD (Settled).

Spoiler :

How to win immortal:
1. Settle a lot of land
2. Build some cottages
3. ????
4. Profit

Ok joking aside, I settled rest of the land, colonized the landmass to our West. Built some cottages, wonders. Played nice with everyone, stayed in their religion, fav civic, then won. Not much excitement really... Here is a different win condition for those that wanted to see it ....

I guess the lady-looking dude didn't like the score:

Yatta - no National Epic in there? Seems like a waste with the Great Library and all those scientist. :)
Good call! But...
Spoiler :
Pyramids... 14 Forests in the Fat Cross...
If you don't do Oxford + National Park here, you do never! ;)
And they are both +1:gp:Scientist, no Artist "contamination".
(toward Fusion, I wanna run over 20 Scientists in there :D )
I'll irrigate even the Elephants once they are obsolete! :p
btw, thanks for the map!

Up to turn 156, 920AD, and pretty happy till now :D, because...
Spoiler :
Without bulbing anything I got first to Paper and even Education before anybody else got to Paper!

Made some good economical deals...

Then, after self researching Philosophy, I started toward Liberalism but, THIS TIME, I remembered to stop half-way, spend a turn on Optics, and Trade Paper for it, ah!

Then finished up with Liberalism (building Universities at the same time, so maximizing :hammers: instead of :science:) to take Astronomy.

At the moment I'm crushing the AI in :science:. I have Education, Liberalism and Astronomy that nobody has, I have University soon finished everywhere, I have the opportunity to build Observatories and soon also Oxford.

I need some army, but Menphis and Elephantine will care about training some Musketmen (and later Rifle) as soon as they are done with their Universities. The Diplomatic issues are ok, my neighborhood Gandhi isn't really popular, and is in war now, so also if he doesn't like me so much, he's Cautious he says, no big deal. :p <- to Gandhi I mean.

Ok, well, pretty good till now.
But in a Civ IV game, you never know... :scared:

Spoiler :

Gandhi became a 15 city monster for some reason. Don't know if this was my fault or just the map. It took 500 years to grind him down:crazyeye:

@ Yatta:
I look forward to seeing your National Park, sounds like fun!
My only fear is:
-5  We demand something we have no idea what it is
-10  Some other guys think you are the nasty guy

from running Caste System and Defying UN Resolutions.
Well, in that case I guess I can only send to the mines the Scientists in the other cities to build :gold: and run an high :culture:% for :). Unless someone here has a better idea... Anyway, we'll see, I still have to research Biology.

@AZ
Same map? I'll check it out as soon as I'm done with my game!

Yeah, baby! This map is sweet. Gotta do the whip overflow instead of whipping Wonders directly. And I HAVE TO REMEMBER I'M SPIRITUAL. AND THAT IF YOU HAVE THE PYRAMIDS, YOU SHOULD SWITCH REGULARLY BETWEEN POLICE STATE AND REPRESENTATION. Instead of idiotically building military units with Representation. Grumble, grumble. At least tech-wise I'm about par. Only one tech behind the leaders.

Letting the computer grow big is fine, as long as you're planning to kill them SOON.

Spoiler :
Played standard. Reason was because this is normal speed and the land around your capital isn't that good. It was:

Worker-warrior-warrior-warrior-settler. Settled the horse-and-gold place first. Went for the Great Wall and FAILED. Fail money though was useful. Then settled the Stone place and got the Pyramids in the capital.

Tech-wise it was: Animal Husbandry, Mining, BW, Masonry, then Writing, Alphabet, Mathematics, Construction, and Horseback Riding. Yeah... I got Construction and quickly realized that I couldn't build elephants without HBR. Lol. Well, the catas were useful.

I've only built two settlers the entire game. Decided that I can back-fill after killing Gandhi.

It's nice to start with ivory and horse .

Ele-pulted Gandhi. Took his capital and several major cities. It helped that everyone else on the Continent decided to go after Gandhi, splitting his forces. I'm in control of a large slice of my continent. Research is at 0%, -13 gold/turn, but since it's a specialist economy it's not too bad.

Got the GL, and the Pyramids.

Second place behind Justinian on the Power Graph. And Gandhi is my vassal!

How do you post a screenshot into the text itself? I can upload it as an attachment, but then what?

Also, take a look. What should I do next?

P.S. Normal goes too fast for me. Not used to it. I'd much prefer Epic.

Second update:

Oh shi-. I should pay attention to religion more. Guess XXXX forgot to spread Buddhism... except to me. Maybe vassalizing and killing XXXX was not such a good idea. The others are all Judaic. Only my vassal and I are Buddhist. Crap. What's the chance of that happening?

Eh. I can beat standard/immortal/normal. NOT A CHALLENGE. That game was won... if someone else was Buddhist too.

You can put full size images into your post by uploading them to civfanatics, you just have to right click the thumbnail and "copy link location" and then put that in the

Sorry for being late with my game again, seems like I play slower than the majority of you (and probably have a bit less time to play). If I'm not too sleepy I'll play a little more tonight. I'll comment my game and check the other spoilers as soon as I finish.

Greetings,
yatta.

Finished and everything is linked to my previous post.
Spoiler :

Loss to Saladin who ran away before I could stop him :(

Gandhi was a freakin' monster. That was one epic battle you fought with him.

I was a bit surprised you did not switch to Free Market when you got Econ.

Second try: Immortal/Epic.

Several notes (more in spoilers):

1. Epic is different from Normal. Not easier. But different. Epic is much more macro-oriented and war-focused. Early warriors are also MUCH better on Epic than Normal. City specialization matters less. But general strategy like "get a lot of specialists and run Representation" matter more. Long-term planning becomes a lot more important: like for example, what research path should I go? Why do I go down this research path? Etc..

2. Wonders are better on Epic. Since you've got more turns to benefit from them (or not benefit from them). The Mausallos on Normal is "meh." On Epic it's "good." On Marathon it's "Awesome!!!!"

3. Since I already know the map, or at least my area of the map, I went worker-stealing. Since it's epic, I could run the worker home BEFORE animals show up. Yeah, ok, I 'fess up. Map abuse.

4. I forgot to turn on Police State during my military build-up AGAIN. :(:mad:

Spoiler :
300 AD-ish. Took out Gandhi again. Except this time Saladin is Christian and Justinian is Buddhist! Yeah!!! Makes a big difference.

Early build order: warrior-warrior-settler-warrior-worker, I think. Got BW first. Then AH, Masonry and went for Writing and Alphabet. Once I finish, I'll post the game. Probably will do a medieval war since Saladin is getting too strong, has the GL, has Paper and Philosophy, and it's Epic speed. Have Feudalism. Now need Engineering, Machinery, and Civil Service.

Immortal Epic. 1400-ish Domination.

Ele-pult against G-. Medieval war against S-. Yeah, Medieval War is not efficient, but it's epic speed. Curraissers against J-. Cavalry against G-.

@MarigoldRan
I didn't check your game spoilers, I want to finish with my game first, here I'm just answering on what you posted outside spoilers.

On Marathon Speed you might even conquer the world with Horse Archers in BCs.
In early rushes (and war campaigns in general) a slower speed it is a HUGE advantage, for many reasons.
It is a slower speed game different? Yes. It is a slower speed game good to learn combat mechanisms? Yes. It is fun? Yes, once in while; I play a Marathon game when I want to play an aggressive game targeting an early Conquest. It is the way I would play all my games? No. A Conquest Victory on a slower Speed can be compared to a Conquest Victory on Normal Speed? Sincerely, definitively not. It is way easier.
You don't believe it? Try it, as I did in game #53. Then, if you enjoy playing on Epic, just do so. I mean, it is your game, do what it is fun for you. :)
Just my 2:commerce:.

btw, in the game #53 thread (posts 36, 37, 40) Nihil and I discussed another advantage managing war campaigns playing on a slower speed: healing turns not scaling with game speed.

yatta.
