Immortal University 55 - Ramesses II

I played till 1600AD. It will probably be a modern/pre-modern epic war against S- and his two vassals S- and G- (maybe third one as well..).

Update to 1844AD:
Wow, very tough game! All Civs are about equal, I believe all have completed Apollo. The last one in score is also trying for a :culture: Victory while the 1st in score tries for a Diplo Victory . I'm still 1st in :science: but it will be hard to complete everything to colonize Alpha Centaury in time.
Pretty long session (at least for my standards), I made too many mistakes (like the last one, which is confusing Casing with the other component you don't need 5: I'm building 2 of the other that makes only the ship one turn faster while I could make a lot of :gold: in that city), but I still alive, and this is Immortal after all.
However it ends, I'll be happy about my game anyways. :)
I'm a bit tired, I'll post a more complete resume with Screen Shots the next session.
No cheat, no reloads, comments welcome :)

Was going to go for a lazy space race...

Won a diplo by accident, but I'm not complaining.

S- got me my pants down.. He declared before I got any army expect some cavalry, and so he took 5 cities from me on the first 2 turns. Now it's quite vital to defend two important cities near the new borders. Another one has about 250 gold income and another has oil near by (I need get that worked on for tanks). With only drafted units it's not too cool to defend, but I am getting my marines out shortly. I'll report with pics where this lead to.

Immortal/normal 1824AD Cultural Victory

Spoiler :

Never went to war in this game, killed a lion and took 2 barb cities and that was all the figthing.

Settled in place with my second city to the north near the horses for unitbuilding and my third to the west at the gold/FP site for commerce.

While Gandhi was expanding like crazy i took a barb city on the coast to the north-east and one on the west-coast while building a total of 7 cities.

I was planning on going the usual route to cannons and take down Gandhi and then the rest of the world, but i got annoyed by him settling on my borders and in between my lands. I built the Shwedagon P. in my border city for some cultural pressure and then decided to just go for a cultural victory.

I only had 2 religions for almost the entire game but it turned out to be enough. The only other wonder i built besides the SP was the Sistine Chapel. I built cathedrals in my 3 cultural cities and after that stayed in Caste and assigned lots of Artists.

It was mostly just pressing enter after that. I stopped research after rifling and built culture from that point.
Took 3 of Gandhi's cities from cultural pressure which was somehow more satisfying then when i had taken them by force.

Good game! :goodjob:

@amanbe
Thanks for the save! I'll check it better later.
So far I just checked the city positions (not too far from what I did).
And thanks for explaining your generic idea playing this game.
You obviously are in control at this level a lot more than me.
I don't really care about the finish date if I manage to win the game, but still the low number of turns you needed is pretty amazing to me.
Great game! :goodjob::king:

Time to watch your videos.

Sorry for bothering you, but already twice another player addressed me to read your writings on Civ IV strategy, and the only one I found was missing all the screen shots. Do you have a more valid link or a .pdf file or something else like a "generic resume" on your strategy? Thanks in advance. :)

This is about the way I won the #54, but you likely played better!
(well at least you needed less turns).

 yeah, he's focus is not the army.

By the way, Shwedagon was built to run Pacifism?

@all
I'm a bit sorry for playing so badly my end game, so missing the target for just 1 turn (next Enter was my victory ).
The map was very good, and I think my game was winnable. I was a bit tired and I made so many mistakes, I kind of forgot to build Factories/PowerPlants after Medicine, and even badly forgot the Laboratory (it needed just 2-3 turns) right after finishing Apollo in the hyper end-game Capital, so I built the firsts Space Ships components and researched the last Techs without the Lab multiplier (while in the other cities I had a Laboratory built while completing Apollo Program in The Capital city). :crazyeye:
And I sold too many late techs for :gold:. So next the light purple guy stoled me like 5-6 Advanced Techs with Espionage with me not having any Spy in my cities then built SS Engine in like 4 turns after discovering Fusion.
I was a bit tired, and definitively too arrogant (it's Immortal after all), after Internet I was like: keep on hitting enter till the Victory (well, till the light purple guy victory in this case). I believe replaying from a previous Save I might win this game, but I'm lazy and it is just too boring to me to play twice the same turns/same map/same game.

btw, there is a Table about Space components and turns to colonize Alpha Centaury?
I know SS Casings are 20% chance to accomplish the mission each, and I know Engine 1-2 and the other you have 1-5 the more you have the faster is the ship, but I like to have a Table like: 1E,1T=xTurns ... 2E,5T=xTurns. Thanks in advance! :)

Heres my 1080bc

Spoiler :

I settled Memphis south of the capital first for the pigs to help whip out workers. Normally Heliopolis would be the first city ( floodplains/gold ) Because of its cottage-ability. But to cottage the capital required BW for forest chops so pottery came in late ( hunting - AH - mining - BW - pottery ) and I needed workers so the pigs first was optimal.

Warrior went NW and then I scouted Ghandi and was thinking how to box him in. Never saw the stone, so didn't think wonders despite the Great Wall still being available at 1080bc. I'm going to pick up the Great Lighthouse since I have lots of coastline blocked off...

Settler is on its way for the horse/fish site to block Ghandi.. You can see I have the cow/gold to the NE.. I have no clue if I want the rice / jungle sites at this point... After writing I figure MC for the colossus at which point i can trade for IW... Lost a warrior trying to push out sw along the coast recently so I don't know if I'll be spamming coastal cities ( GLh ) or grabbing the jungle ghandi block..

Civ4ScreenShot1329.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot1330.jpg

As for victory?
Spoiler :

Probably space. I don't like it, but I'm reaching for land/cities which only slows me down to cavalry. No GS yet for academy since if I'm expanding I'll be running a low slider early. The high city count means I'll be dominant late with my tech pace, but the cities won't have enough food around 1000 ad to make a whipped cavalry rush at that point strong. HE is unlocked, but no great site for it.

Finished and everything is linked to my previous post.
Video II, min.19', gifting a Technology asking someone to make peace with someone else to prevent a Master-Vassal situation: those are bits of geniality missing in my games! :goodjob::king:
I watched till stealing Nationalism, I'll watch the rest of Video II and the others in the next days.
Uhm... I'll probably play focusing a bit more on Espionage the next game, just to do something different from my usual (I usually Tech the standard way, but I even did play few games focusing aggressively on Espionage to test it out, but that was a long while before the last Bts patch was released. In most cases, I feel safer/easier for me to tech the standard way).

Thanks for the videos! :)

@ yatta

By the way, Shwedagon was built to run Pacifism?

Not really. I did use it later but the reason i built it was mostly for some extra culture because Gandhi just planted a city next to mine.
I didn't really have anything else to build and since everybody was in the same religion i didn't need many troops.
Besides, i had gold and was industrious so it was cheap. :)

I have no idea what kind of donkeys are telling you that, except for those wanting you to fail at succeeding at this game. Haha!

Alright, there is still one archive left around which has some images that didn't get eaten up by the internet black-hole just yet. I did these way back when everyone kept telling me how useless industrious was.

Anyhow, keep in mind the game has changed a lot since then. Now we are plagued by over-flow bugs, and so on, so things won't work out as well today as from most of those IIRC. It's been a long time...

Industrious Deity Series

Currently playing this one... i just started my cavalry war against the 20 cities of the biggest Master/Vassal team. There are already two things that make this game special for me. Something i have never pulled off on emp/imm and a military buildup technique that is more than questionable haha. But i will come up with a detailed report and screens when i finished playing.

Sorry, but I have to disagree on this. :)
I read the Augustus game for now: was a really interesting reading, and ScreenShots/SaveAttachment were really helpful to follow your writing. Btw, I like your "ironically talking to myself" style in writing, it make reading the subject entertaining and fun. As for example:
Also, my tech now is going through the roof, not bad considering we are NOT FINANCIAL nor did we even build a SINGLE COTTAGE all game. Put that in your pipe and smoke it critics…..

Trade Routes are something I tend to under evaluate a bit too much, and since I like to have an average diplomacy with everyone in the beginning of my peaceful games, and I hate when an AI settles on both sides of my land, I often quite stubbornly end up having close borders with everyone, waiting for Mercantilism (as Tokugawa  ).

Now we are plagued by over-flow bugs
Yeah... and the Unofficial Patch mixes up facts* with too many subjective issues.
*(link, link)

Also the AI Era-%Bonus discussion was really interesting, I didn't know that the difference in :hammers: needed building the Space Ship Components was so huge in favor of the AI. I wish I knew that (and played better this end-game): thinking about it, to send that ship on Alpha Centaury few turns earlier and win the game it could be enough switch to WorkShops some Farms in the end game, lowering the number of specialists in my cities, since specialists were quite useless at that point of the game with the tech tree already completed and a lot of :gold: from running a 0% :science: slider.
Anyways, no excuses: I can only blame myself for playing so poorly this end game! Shame on me!

Thanks for the Link! :)
I'll read the rest of the series in the next days, as soon as I get some time.

Greetings,
yatta.

It is definitely a bug, although the effect on game play is minor. Sorry about that.

I expect an idiotic downplay like that to come from someone who worked at Firaxis BTW...

Of course, a quick BtS 3.20 Official Patch from Firaxis would be very welcome and the best and more appreciable solution; but at least one of the developers had the honesty to admit the development staff made a mistake and somehow addressed the modders community on the correct way to fix it.
Now, we can't blame on not payed modders anything of course, but I really wonder why, in zillions of mods out there, it is not available an "only correcting proven coding mistakes" version of the Unofficial Patch (which includes many other arguable corrections).
AFAIK, such "basic" version of the Unofficial Patch doesn't exist. I mean, and I can be wrong on that, I just couldn't find a version that fixes only the few issues proven to be a bug by facts (as the case above) in order to allow the community to play the game in the way it was intended to be played by the game designers; skipping on any other issue where what it is correct and what it is not is matter of personal opinions, theories or tastes.
Just my 2:commerce:. Just an academical point of view. I hope all this makes sense in English.

Hey all,
had a very nice game with this one. Here is the battlereport (contains 18 screenshots):

Spoiler :

I settled in place, met my first neighbors and expanded a little bit. Around 850 BC i had to make a decision: Should i expand more into the jungled north or give the mids a try. Although i had stone i decided against the mids and for a more aggressive expand style. Here is a overview of my empire at 850BC:

civ4screenshot0052.jpg

And the three juicy spots i aimed for. The two left ones would make good cottage cities and the right a production monster:

civ4screenshot0053.jpg

I got the two spots in the west but Gandhi and Saladin settled close to the other one giving me some cultural pressure. However mids were still not gone so i gave it a try. With 6 or 7 math/stone/ind boosted chops (each worth 75 hammers) i got the baby at 250BC:

civ4screenshot0057x.jpg

I switched into representation instantly. With my jungle resources, cheap temples and rep my cities could reach size 14+ without any trades. This and a nice bureau capital resulted in a good techrate. 1 AD empire:

civ4screenshot0058m.jpg

Tech situation:

civ4screenshot0059.jpg

And AIs:

civ4screenshot0060.jpg

I know Gandhi would capitulate to Saladin soon and watched his city count carefully... but not carefully enough: He became vassal of Saladin which i absolutely could have avoided with a tech gift to Sala for peace. Clear missplay here. Now i had a pretty wide warfront when i decide to go for Sala/Gandhi.... but we will see. First the race to lib. I used my first two Scientists for an academy in my capital and bulbed Edu with the second one. With 3 very good cottage cities (one monster capital) I reached lib in 780AD:

civ4screenshot0062.jpg

Techsituation that time:

civ4screenshot0063.jpg

Ok i had a lot time for lib so i decided to go something else. I traded carefully, bulbed printing press, timed my research slider and switched research 1 turn before crucial techs. In 1110AD it was time: in 4 following turns i got replaceable parts, gunpowder, liberalism and:

civ4screenshot0066.jpg

Woohoo i never pulled that off before. This was even better when saw that none of the AIs had neither gunpowder nor replacable parts nor military tradition...good! Having Rifling in mind for lib bulb i researched military tradition and did build barracks and stables everywhere. A cavalry rush seemed perfect. But how quick can i build up the army? I didnt wanna whip away my cottages. I came up with an idea a few turns before which was worth a try. Why not create some merchants, get gold and buy halfbuild cavalry with universal suffrage. I wanted to get 3 merchants but: First one was a scientists at 40%, second on a merchant at 88% and the last an engineer at 11%. Haha you get him when you dont need him. I did build up my cavs with the one trademission and a few turns of 100% gold. Anyway in retrospect it wasnt worth it still paying around 200 gold for a halfway done cav. Anyway it was time for the trumpet. The plan was: Declare, get one city, wait and annihilate Salas stack, get one or two high pop cities (Gandhi was at 37% master pop and would break free above 50%), make peace with Gandhi, finish off Sala, cap Gandhi and then lets see where we stand. Right before my cashcav buildup i switched into war civics for 9XP cavs:

civ4screenshot0067.jpg

I dont know why i forgot slavery and switched into it 5 turns later. I stayed in universal suffrage over police state because i got some towns in the meantime and want to emergency rushbuy if needed. I dowed Sala/Gandhi, got the first city and waited for Salas stack (which i scouted before):

civ4screenshot0072.jpg

The stack is standing on the hill NW of Calcutta and was almost completely annihilated this turn by my cavalry. In yellow two possible fork attacks for the next turns. I actually did chose the left one because i wanted to head towards Dheli (18pop) for population reduction. Here another showcase why fast units are so powerful:

civ4screenshot0074z.jpg

The stack is able to go for Salas city in the north or engage his counter stack in the south in one turn. With reinforcing cavs i was able to get the city and kill his stack in this turn. The war then became a little bit tedious because i had to go beyond Baghdad to cap Saladin which i did not expect. One turn after Saladin capitulated Ghandi came up with an offer i couldnt refuse:

civ4screenshot0076.jpg

He did not have that many wonders anyway... he is so wise i think he foresaw his capitulation :). In the meantime the 3 civs left on this continent got Rifling and were teching ahead. Assembly line was in reach for them so no time to waste. I gathered my horses, declared on Justinian and told Sala and gandhi to attack in hope that Justinian sends his troops to the northern cities (worked halfway i guess):

civ4screenshot0078.jpg

In yellow the perfekt fork attack having Constantinople in mind. However... this is how you SHOULD do it. I foolishly did send my stack 1N of the hill and lost a few more units. My quadro/penta promoted cavs were doing ok against Riflemen starting with 1% win 60% retreat odds or so. My numbers were just so big that Justinian couldnt do anything about it. Finally got his sweet capital :

civ4screenshot0080f.jpg

... and capped him few turns later. I immediately dowed Sury and then Giggles who capitulated after a few war turns. I then switched all home cities to wealth, all captured cities to culture, went into free speech and 100% culture and stopped getting new land at 63.95% with 64% being the magical domination number. It really look all 11 turns until Giggles capital went out of revolt :) :

Wow, looks like you managed to have in your hands the control of your destiny for the whole game! Btw, cool Screen Shots! Very explicative!
Great Game! :goodjob:
Greetings,

Thanks yatta!

Spoiler :

I really was never in danger of being dowed by anyone. That helped alot. I tried to lure Sala into a war with somebody but he went into warmode himself about 50 turns before i attacked. Sadly he never declared on anybody... however i think his WHEOOHRN mode resulted in an abnormal high power. He had roughly 40% more power than me when i dowed (check last screen powergraph) although i had high pop, ~25 cavs, alot baracks/stables and military techs (MT, gunpowder, Rifling). That really slowed the war against him down.

Another thing i noticed: Why the hell did i not switch into mercantilism before the war? When i dowed Sala he blocked all traderoutes anyway. Still alot things to improve :)

Edit: And OMG the Constantinople screen reveals that i have no Oxford... what the... i know i did not aim for fast Oxford because i was concentrating on the rifling bulb but no Oxford (with access to stone) in 1665AD is embarassing :D

obs - This is great stuff. I did not realize you had any instructional stuff out there - your reports are generally so terse and uninformative. You have so much to offer to the member here. Man, if you could get some videos rocking that would be fantastic. I think there are quite a few members here that are close to deity but missing that extra edge that you power players have.
