Immortal University 96 - Wang Kon

Neat!
SOM XI: Washington is another map with which you may want to fiddle, using that same rare strategy. Very appropriate, there, too, even though a more standard approach could probably accomplish about the same thing.
It's interesting how bulbing religion denies the techs to the AI. Theology, you may want to trade, to have the AP built for you.

Spoiler :
Thanks. I did not actually bulb any religions (only bulbed CS so far) but you're right that the AI will tend to avoid CoL or Theo (or Philo if I get it) unless I trade them around. Trading Theo away might be risky since I don't want a Hindu AP and Mehmed might either convert religions or not bother with the AP, so I'd probably rather build in myself in the capitol. It's only 200 base hammers with Forge+OR+CS, and I have several forests left.

I'm not sure what you mean by a standard approach, since this depends heavily on what victory condition I pursue. Obviously my strategy would work well toward a cultural victory since the more religions I found, the more Cathedrals I can build, but I might have to weaken Gilgamesh substantially since he would not be an easy neighbor to stay at peace with. I would probably go Metal Casting->Aest->Lit->Music with Parthenon in Pusan (160 base hammers), Sistine in Seoul (200 base hammers), and NE in my southern cow/wheat/fish city (100 base hammers), and either delay the AP or skip it completely. I doubt that a strategy of founding few or no religions would work nearly as well on this map with few religious neighbors and few helpful traits.

For a military or space win I would probably go Metal Casting->Machinery->Construction(and Engineering?)->Aest->Lit (for NE/HE/late GLib), and results would depend on if I can build a bunch of Maces+Crossbows+Hwachas before Gilgamesh gets Longbows/Crossbows. Compared to something like Oracle->MC with an earlier Academy I might get the army 5-10 turns sooner and with Theocracy promos, which could easily result in a win 50 turns sooner. It would be hard to compare two approaches though because RNG luck determines things like whether I get Construction in trade and how soon Gilgamesh goes for defensive techs. I don't know how my strategy would effect a pure diplo game.

Ah! Yes, indeed, I forgot about Cultural Victory. I've never done one, so I tend forget about that option.

By "standard", I suppose I meant not religion-centric and not great prophet-centric. Great Prophet bulbing Civil Service stands out as non-standard, to me. GS building Academy would be standard.

@No religious techs "bulbed". Indeed, my mistake. There's a neat religious slingshot from the Oracle, instead, not quite the same  I agree I didn't choose my terms very well.

Played through on Monarch. Settled the incense.

1670 Domination victory.

Spoiler :
I had an unusual amount of barb trouble for Monarch, including some barb spears which I don't usually see. Bad news when your barb defense is chariots!

Oracled CoL, built Great Library. Lib MT. Attacked Gilgamesh with Cuirs around 1150AD and knocked him out without too much trouble. Invaded Ghandi with galleys and he folded before long.

Next Mehmed, who had surprisingly little military.

Around this point I met the other continents and they were very backward. Took out Cyrus and Joao easily, then on to Saladin. Chichen Itza + Protective was pretty nasty but he still didn't have Gunpowder. Lastly the Maya.
